Prambanan Temple (Central Java Indonesia):

This is a Hindu temple located in Central Java, Indonesia.

In ancient times, the official religion of Indonesia was Hindu and then Buddhist.

But after the rise of Islam now it is a Muslim nation.

 Dedicated to Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva, this temple is believed to have been built in the 9th century.

Religious stories and magnificent carvings are carved on the walls of the temple.
Prambanan is the largest and most beautiful Hindu temple complex in Indonesia.

It is the masterpiece of Hindu culture of the ninth century.
Prambanan is a collection of massive Hindu temples (candi) built by the Mataram Kingdom, rulers of central Java and defeaters of the Sailendra Dynasty.
A temple was first built at the site around 850 CE by Rakai Pikatan and expanded extensively by King Lokapala and Balitung Maha Sambu the Sanjaya king of the Mataram Kingdom.
It is dedicated to the Trimurti (Trinity of the formless supreme God), the expression of God as the Creator (Brahma), the Preserver (Vishnu) and the Destroyer (Shiva).
The complex is laid out in the form of a mandala, and features the towering, broad spires that are typical of Hindu temple architecture, and represent Meru, the holy mountain where the gods live.
Originally there were 240 temples in the complex but many of them have deteriorated or been looted leaving just scattered stones.
The Prambanan temple complex consists of three zones; first the outer zone, second the middle zone that contains hundreds of small temples, and third the holiest inner zone that contains eight main temples and likewise, eight small shrines.
The three main inner shrines are dedicated to Brahma the Creator, Vishnu the Keeper and Shiva the Destroyer.

The three towers cut a striking figure in any conditions, but are perhaps most breathtaking when lit up at night.
The Shiva temple dedicated to Shiva the Destroyer is the tallest and largest structure in Prambanan complex, it measures 47 meters (154 feet) tall and 34 meters (111 feet) wide. Relief sculptures around the perimeter tell the story of the Ramayana.
The Shiva temple contains five chambers, four small chambers in every cardinal direction and one bigger main chamber in central part of the temple. The largest chamber contains a three meter (10 feet) high statue of Shiva Mahadeva.
North of Shiva Temple is Vishnu Temple, dedicated to Vishnu the Preserver. It measures 20 meters (65 feet) wide and 33 meters (108 feet) tall. Relief sculptures around its perimeter tell the story of Lord Krishna, an avatar of Vishnu.
South of Shiva Temple is Brahma Temple, dedicated to Brahma the Creator. It also measures 20 meters (65 feet) wide and 33 meters (108 feet) tall. Relief sculptures around the perimeter tell the story of the Ramayana.
The narrative bas-relief panels was carved along the inner balustrades wall on the gallery around the three main temples.
The other three shrine in front of three main temples is dedicated to vehicle (vahana) of the respective gods – the bull Nandi for Shiva, the sacred swan Hamsa for Brahma, and Vishnu’s Kite Garuda.
Between these row of main temple, on north and south side stands two Candi Apit temples. Apit in Javanese means “flank”, it refer to the two temples position that flanked the inner courtyard in north and south sides.
The middle zone consists of four rows of 224 identical, concentrically arranged shrines. Most of these are in ruins but a few have been fully restored. These shrines are called Candi Perwara (guardian temples).
The outer zone is a large open space that was once bounded by a large wall (long gone). The function of this space is disputed but was probably either a park/relaxation garden or the site of an ashram for temple priests brahmins.
The other name of this temple is the Lorojonggrang temple.

A major earthquake in the 16th century caused serious damage to the already crumbling and largely forgotten temples.

The British rediscovered Prambanan, along with Borobudur, in the early 19th century.
Half-hearted excavations by archaeologists in the 1880s facilitated looting. In 1918, the Dutch began
reconstruction of the compound and proper restoration only in 1930. Efforts at restoration continue to this day.
The reconstruction of the main Shiva temple was completed around 1953 and inaugurated by Sukarno (the first President of Indonesia).

Prambanan was selected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991.

Prambanan attracts many visitors from around the world.

RANI NAIKI DEVI AND THE BATTLE OF KASAHRADA

Mohammad Ghori, the young Ghurid Prince conquered Ghaznavids in Afghanistan in the year 1173 CE. He conducted some successful raids into the Indian territory, which even Mahmud Ghazni & the Persians couldn't do.


First&foremost,Ghori invaded states of Multan &Uch in India.After this he turned to southern states of Gujarat &Rajputana.Everybody knows this about Ghori,but what most pple r unaware of is the defeat he suffered at hands of Chalukyan Queen Naiki Devi in 1178 Battle of Kasahrada.


When he marched southwards, his first target was the prosperous fortified town of Anhilwara Patan.
It was the capital of Chalukyas(also known as Solankis of Gujarat) which was established by Vanraj of Chapotkata Dynasty in 8th century.


American historian Tertius Chandler states that it was the 10th largest city in the world at that time. The history of Chalukyas has been written by many historians, but the valour of the Great Queen Naiki Devi remains unsung.


Born to the Kadamba King Paramardin of Goa,Naiki Devi was well trained in sword fighting, horse riding, strategy & every other subject of Statesmanship. She was married to King Ajaypala of Gujarat who sat on throne in 1171CE. Unfortunately,the King died within 4 yrs of his rule.

Starting my 2nd thread on Sringeri Parampara. This will cover the Jagadgurus after Sri Vidyaranya to Sri Shivabhinava Nrisimha Bharati.

It is really very tough to match the brilliance and achievements of Vidyaranya. After whom came 15 - Chandrashekara Bharati [1386-1389].

The next Acharya was Nrisimha Bharati [1389-1408]. Harihara raya found a town for this Acharya - Narasimhapuram. Acharya helped the king by guiding him in political affairs. He also initiated the kind with mahamantras for spiritual development.

15-Puroshottama Bharati [1408 - 1448]
16-Shankara Bharati[1448 - 1455]
17-Chandrasekhara Bharati II [1455 - 1464]
18- Nrisimha Bharati II [1464 - 1479]

20-Ramachandra Bharati [1517 - 1560]. Sadashiva Raya was emporer of Vijayanagara during this time.

23-Nrisimha Bharati V [1576 - 1600]

24-Abhinava Nrisimha Bharati [1600-1623]. When he visited Malahanikareswara temple for first time he noticed there was no Vinayaka there so he took piece of turmeric and drew outline of Ganesha on a pillar and offered puja.

Mahabharat - the great war - 18 days of heroism, deceit, blood and intrigue - now as a mega Twitter thread.

I'll add the events from a few days of the war each day.

Caveats: lots of editorialization, creative liberties and interpretations.

There will also be a lot of asides - especially around war strategy and tactics, the characters and their motivations and non-canon storylines.

Over the years, I've read multiple versions, phenomenal translations and modern retellings. So be prepared for a potpourri.

There are different ways of looking at this war. Was it a family feud? Sure - but whose family? Shantanu's or Satyavati's? Was Vyas essentially telling us his family history? And then Kunti added a twist to this tale. Here's a helpful chart:


Satyavati's two sons from Shantanu both died without children. Vyas - her first son - fathered Dhritarashtra and Pandu (and Vidur).

Pandu never fathered any children. Kunti and Madari gave birth to six demi-gods (Karna and the five Pandavs).

So Satyavati Vs Kunti and Madari.

Or was this a fight between two massive neighbouring kingdoms - the Kurus and the Panchals? While many smaller kingdoms joined the battle, most of the Pandav army (more than half of their 7 divisions) came from the Panchals. King Drupad and his son Shikhandi led two divisions.

Some quick thoughts on Sam Gyimah's resignation after conversations with various Conservative MPs: 1) the chances of a second referendum are a lot higher than I thought:

2) At this point, if you are a young and ambitious Tory MP it is now so overwhelmingly in your interest to vote against the withdrawal agreement. V v hard to see how Julian Smith can cap rebellion at under 100:

3) Really just to reiterate 1) Gyimah is the kind of "No, never gonna rebel" vaguely pro-EU Tory you'd need to get on side to outweigh Labour Leavers and Real Concerners.
