At this point I don't care if Twitter don't have an edit tweet option. All I want is a folder system for all my bookmarked tweets.

When will twitter allow us to sort our bookmarks out? I want folders to put my aus in

1/ Today I prepared for talking about common mistakes startups make (founding -> growth stages) by writing it in tweet form. I ramble too much when public speaking and hoped it would make the core ideas clearer in my mind and more concise. Think it worked. Here are the tweets

2/ Earliest mistake is picking the wrong co-founders. You have to be value-aligned (don’t have conflicting personal goals) and respect each other. With both of these, any other differences are irrelevant - can be worked out. Without them everything else you do is irrelevant.

3/ If you launch, next mistake is chasing top-line vanity metrics (sign ups) instead of growing the number of users who *really* love you. @paultoo advice - better to have 10 users who depend on you than 100 who a lukewarm. This requires patience and killing your ego.

4/ If you raise a seed round, it’s tempting to ignore retention. With money, there are always ways to grow top-line (buy ads, launch a new location). Strong fundraisers can do this for multiple rounds (though investors are more savvy to this now). Eventually, the bottom falls out

5/ Once you’re growing without churn, you find you have a diverse set of customers and can’t make them all happy -it’s easy to fail trying. Commit to a long term strategy for going public and build for the users who get you there, even if you lose the others. You have to focus.

Social Intelligence 101:

If your friend is telling you about an accomplishment, do not try to one-up them by sharing an accomplishment of your own.

Tame your ego.

Sit back and actively listen.

I always recommend @JackieKayPoet - not just because she gave a blueprint for life as a Black Scottish lesbian, but because there is so much delight and generosity of spirit in her work. Every word counts. She’s also really funny. Proud that Jackie is our Poet Makar.

Here are some main takeaways + my verdict 👇

(1) Acquisition is the easiest path to entrepreneurship

Don’t have an idea? You don’t have to have one. Buy one.

Don’t know how to code? You don’t have to. Use revenue to outsource development.

Don’t have money? You don’t have to have any. Bring in an equity partner. Leverage a debt from family/friends, tech lender, or even the seller.

Capital is not an excuse.

(2) Acquiring has a few distinct advantages to building

Namely:
- Validated demand
- Leverage debt/equity partners
- Focus on going from 1-10, not 0-1

Validate demand:

Acquiring a business that has paying customers saves you the time and energy you would have spent trying to figure out if there was demand for it in the first place.

Acquiring skips that step altogether.

On my 3 year nomadiversary, I'm looking at 1 yr apartment leases.
It's a whole new level of culture shock being home in 🇺🇸 again. I'm ready to be in one place but also feel like a part of my identity and community is being stripped away.

I'll spend the rest of 2019 rediscovering magic.

Travel took up so much of my energy that now that I'm done, I'm not sure what else brings me a sense of wonder. I need to relearn who I am and what feels right.

A few tips and notes to myself – Why I should write more about my work and what I wish I knew before I started [thread] ✍️

Writing can help you process something, document your work, let you review your progress, improves your documentation and communication skills.

Writing about your personal insights and experiences can help younger designers who aren’t at your stage in your career: you can inspire.

If you write in another language: It’s not important that your English isn’t the best. There are people who can support you and help you with editing. You will learn with each new piece you write. Ask them for feedback and writing patterns that you can improve.

Tip for interviews and Q&As: Record yourself or imagine recording yourself answering questions, let it flow, and write it down. This helps you reduce the pressure and your first draft is done in no time!

I don’t buy into “you should have a cofounder”

I think investors are just hedging their bets on the team

Actively finding a cofounder seems odd and forced to tick a box ✅

If you (potentially) have one, great!

💰Pay amazing folks (contract/FTE/PTE)

One pro is to share the burden with someone who cares as much about the business as you do.

Going looking for a cofounder (whether you’re pressured to or not) seems like a disaster

Live an interesting enough life, and you’ll never be easy to describe

A lot of bootstrappers think they have a marketing problem:

"I need to get better at marketing."

But, it's more likely that you have a product problem:

"Do customers really want this? Do they care enough about this to switch to a new solution?"

I was reminded of this concept again this morning while reading @pjrvs' book (Company of One):

"Sales increase when you honestly evaluate what someone needs and then teach them the value of what you're selling."

To succeed, your product has to offer an outcome that is highly desirable to a large group of customers.

The number of sales your product receives is a multiple of these two variables:

1. How big is the target market?
2. How desirable is the outcome you're offering them?
