"Two people familiar with the matter say that in recent days, Trump has told advisers and close associates that he wants to keep fighting in court past Jan. 6 if members of Congress, as expected, end up certifying the electoral college results."

"'Must block Dem and [Republicans in Name Only],' one planning graphic posted on pro-Trump forum 'The Donald' read, showing a map of key streets around Congress that protesters want to obstruct. 'There’s 535 politicians and ~3500 guards.'"
The other bone Trump tickled for small business people and aspirants was his hostility to taxes and regulation, the two things that feel the most arbitrary and capricious to someone trying something very difficult which is to get a small business to profitability.

If you are trying to start a restaurant, and a black or latino, or god forbid, female AND black or latino city worker comes to inspect and finds a small problem, or the government is telling you what the minimum wage must be, or the ADA is requiring a ramp when you've (ct'd)

never had a customer even once come in in a wheelchair can feel like the government is solely in the business of making you fail. And then charging you for it in the form of your tax bill.

The most vitriolic pushback I get is when I speak out about preserving the estate tax, even though 99.8% of estates owe no tax at all. That is because the people swearing at me online are thinking that I am trying to take away the imaginary money they aspire to make.

I am pissing on the dream of them being my Uncle Walt going from rags to riches in the American Dream. Because the dream is so real to the people who hold it, but so unreal in practical life, the disconnect between how great it sounds and the likelihood of it ever happening ct'd
1) The danger and tragedy is that people have been told by Trump, McCarthy, Cruz and others in responsible positions that there is reason to doubt the validity of the election; then whipped up by social media promising Trump will eventually be declared the winner...

2) When, after all that, Biden is being inaugurated, many will go nuts: the cognitive discord is just too great and they will be convinced that Biden must be stopped. Yes, the fault lies with crazy conspiracy peddlers; but they were given support and legitimacy by the officials.

3) who enabled Trump and supported his lies about the election being stolen FOR MONTHS. What they should have done is spent the last two months defending the elections, telling people the only challenges should be in the courts, preparing people to ACCEPT that Trump fairly lost.

4) By keeping alive popular hopes that Trump could somehow win; by talking up empty court challenges, saying the courts didn't really hear the evidence; by refraining from criticizing Trump's broadcasting of even crazy conspiracy theories; GOP officials THEMSELVES gave reason and

5) motivation for people to riot against certifying Biden's becoming President, and even more to fight the inauguration of a "false" President. It will be very hard to undo months of lies to this effect coming from the top levels of the GOP and US Government. ALL GOP who did
Officials had been telling the public for months that because of Dems disproportionately voting by mail, and Republicans disproportionately voting on Election Day, early results would be misleading based on how states counted votes.... 1/

2/ Ohio and Texas counted vote by mail early so those states would misleadingly seem stronger for Biden than they would prove to be when all votes were counted. The reverse would be true in Michigan and Pennsylvania. We’d been reporting this for weeks to prepare viewers.

3/ Trump knew this too and it was clear he intended to mislead the country by declaring the election decided before all the votes had been counted.

What I think many of us didn’t realize is the extent to which some Republicans and MAGA media would help him perpetuate this lie.

4/ This was one of the reasons that lawsuit from the Texas Attorney General was such utter garbage. There were a lot of just plain lies in that lawsuit, which the US Supreme Court rightly kicked to the curb, but this was one of the starkest.

5/ The suit claimed the “probability” of Biden “winning the popular vote in... Georgia, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin — independently given President Trump’s early lead in those States as of 3 a.m. on November 4, 2020, is less than one in a quadrillion.”

Big conspiracy theory right now is that NPR "mistakenly" published news on what conspiracy theorists believe was a planned faked invasion ahead of time. Just look at the time when this was published and look at the headline they are saying! Here's why that's idiotic.

Here's the URL to that story. Notice something about the end of it?
https://t.co/KTpdsjl0Mz sections/congress-electoral-college-tally-live-updates/ 2021/01/06/953616207/ diehard-trump-supporters-gather-in-the-nations-capital-to-protest-election-resul

The end of the URL often encodes a page's original headline. And in this case that looks like "diehard-trump-supporters-gather-in-the-nations-capital-to-protest-election-resul" not the violence piece.

Via the Wayback Machine we can get a snapshot of it from about when it was published, and yep, a different headline. https://t.co/38O7tynorf

Why is that? Well news organizations often run a story in the morning and update it throughout the day as events unfold. When events change substantially, they often change the headline as well.
Here's a thread documenting the epic incompetence of the Trump administration + the GOP in dealing with the pandemic. Some Democratic politicos deserve severe critiques also (Cuomo and DeBlasio being the poster children there) but a national problem requires a national response.

Remember, that for pandemics as well as for climate change, "Speed trumps perfection". Stop obsessing about "optimality". There is nothing optimal about responding to a pandemic or to climate change, just move as fast as you can.

Hey look, the GOP (not Trump) hamstrung the Obama Administration's effort to build up strategic reserves to fight pandemics going as far back as 2011:

Hey look, there was a pandemic response plan developed by national security officials in 2016, which Trump and the GOP ignored:

Hey look, Trump and the GOP disbanded the pandemic response unit in 2018:
Unless you want to ignore the threat of Trump's coup, Trump running our departments, pro Trump people running our inauguration & most of the people in charge of guarding the inauguration are white & therefor many of them are white supremacists & pro Trump. @benFranklin2018

If people were to pay more attention to @benFranklin2018 & take their words seriously, we'd be in a far better place. They argue that posts that one that this tweet is responding to are cringe & instill a false sense of complacency & security. Those voices are promoted on MSM.

This is b/c they don't want to promote any panic among the American people. They also realize that the same corporations serve Trump as them, hence we have a fascist threat.

Something that I notice too is that those who are the most likely to deny that Trump's coup is still going on & that it has a dangerous level of succeeding are white & older. P.o.C & younger people are not as likely to deny the problem.

The part to keep in mind is that older people & white people are more likely to benefit from a Trump dictatorship &/or be indoctrinated w/American exceptionalism. In terms of our gov't, there is no comparison b/t the 1960's & today. Today, our gov't is authoritarian.
