 2/ Grantham from GMO is labeled as a value investor, but don't let it fool you. Unlike other "geniuses" he doesn't just check P/E or P/S, but also factors in growth, including possibly huge growth.

Ultimately his preference or bias is for dividend stocks, but he's doing it right
3/ He sees the current condition as a bubble that should burst in. 2 months - unless further inflated by the fed.

If you disagree don't stop reading. Important!
4/ Before pointing to where i agree and where i don't, i think it's ULTRA IMPORTANT for investors to hear opposing views, when they have firm grounds

Fine to disagree but bad to just dismiss or ignore - do that and you might lose everything

(that's the only ADVICE i give, BTW)
5/ Grantham sees the market as a bubble that should burst in. 2 months - unless further inflated by the fed

History shows that on bull mkts once everyone is HUGELY optimistic and put EVERYTHING they have in the mkt, there is nowhere else to go (unless fed gives even more money)

Bc "The opportunity is too good to miss out" I not only put ALL my savings in stocks, i also borrowed to do so.

I won't sell on bad news, but those leveraged like me who will sell (in panic or margin calls) could lose everything
7/ B4 going with what IMO he has right and what very wrong, another pointer that this is no Gordon Johnson.
He invests in clean energy, he believes we should all make the world (not just shareholders) happy,

His analysis is bright, he's just wrong on some assumptions and facts
8/ OK.. He's right in thinking many stocks are a huge bubble inflated by faith. He invested in QuantumScape but admits that a company with no product, no revenues for at least 4years should NOT be larger than GM

He hates SPACs. Much better to make regular IPOs more accessible
9/ We saw how big the $NKLA bubble got before bursting.

We saw Tilman Fertitta roll his Golden Nugget company's debt to the LCA SPAC he also ran that purchased it.

We see vaporware companies getting huge valuations. What happens when they pop?
10/ Robin Hooders sometimes see stocks as a money printing machine that never goes down. This is dangerous.

He says that if (artificial) federal bond rates are low, this changes the temptation to invest in companies - but NOT the basic tech and fundamentals of the company
11/ He sees bitcoin as a 0 Dividend stock based on pure faith. You can sell a bitcoin for $1m if someone believes it's worth it; but there's no intrinsic value. No dividend and you can't eat it

Smart interviewer said same true for gold, and Grantham's answer didn't convince 🙂
12/ I agree to a lot and will keep watch for warning signs - but more importantly I disagree on the bottom line.

I'm NOT investing in balloon SPACs.
I'm NOT investing in 0-value companies just bc "they're like Tesla"

The only investments I make are in companies ...
13/ i only invest in disruptive companies for which i am fairly certain I can calculate a future stream of revenues far higher than what mkt assumes
If cash-Fed 😉 spac/ev bubble explodes, Tesla will still make lotsa cars which will have lotsa demand (Despite lower luxury sales)
14/ Same for my smaller holdings (FUV, NVX, ARKK, ARKG). They could suffer once the overall party's over, but NOT NEARLY AS MUCH as the bubble stocks

And two years later the dip will be forgotten bc long-term value won't change

That's a risk i'm willing to take 4 current upside

In my 20 years of trading I have noticed this cycle play out again and again with traders that "make it":

3. Simplify + concentrate on clear, high probability edges.

Nearly everyone starts with a lack of respect for how hard it is to consistently make money trading.

That leads them to pass over high-probability sources of returns in favor of more marginal ideas.

Or they overcomplicate the trading of a good edge.

2/n

Here's an example...

It is 2015. You look at a simple strategy.

You hold an equal dollar exposure to:
- Cap Weighted US Stocks (VTI)
- 20+ Yr US Treasury Bonds (TLT)
- Gold (GLD)

And rebalance each month.

(I've extended back a bit with mutual fund prices.)

It made money consistently with a few blips.

You'd have 4x your money from 1997 to 2015.

It makes sense. It's harnessing two big sources of risk premia (equity + duration).

It diversifies across 3 macro assets that tend to outperform in different econ environments

And here is where it gets dangerous!

There are good ways to try to "do better", and there are bad ways to try to "do better".

There is no shortage of takes about what's going on with Gamestop (and other surging stocks), Robinhood and Reddit's r/wallstreetbets, many of them contradictory - at least on the face of them. But I think it's possible for most of these takes to be right. Here's how.

First you need to understand the underlying mechanics of the story. Stock markets are fundamentally a way of making bets, including bets on the outcome of other peoples' bets, and bets on the outcomes of THOSE bets.

2/

All this complexity creates lots of exploitable opportunities. Some of these opportunities are considered legitimate and are given respectable names like "arbitrage." Others are considered illegitimate, and are called disreputable things like "stock manipulation."

3/

A hypothetical Martian observing all this through a telescope could not tell you which kinds of bets were honest and which were dishonest, because the difference isn't about any objective standard, but rather, about power.

4/

The strategies of powerful people are legit, while the strategies of their would-be dethroners are not legit. Sometimes, even outright frauds are OK if they're done by people with enough power.

A small thread on momentum investing and how I practice it.

I use the Nifty 500 universe for selecting my momentum stocks. Nifty 500, as the name suggests, has 500 companies in it. WRONG !!!! It actually has 501 companies. Yes, I double-checked 🙂 So, these 501 companies is

my talent pool (if you will) from which I select the 50 best candidates that I want to bet my money on.

Ok. So, exactly, did I go about doing that.

Step 1: Start with Nifty 500 universe (501 companies)

Step 2: Eliminate all those companies which have a listing history of

less than 1 year. This eliminated 25 companies (see table).

Step 3: For the remaining 476 companies, I computed their last 12-month rolling price returns (meaning, comparison of their price as on March 31, 2022 as compared to that as on March 31, 2021, and then computing the %


gain that each of those stocks have earned. I found out the following:

a) Average return of all the 476 companies was 43.27% (meaning if their average price as on March 31, 2021 was 100, then their average price as on March 31, 2022 was 143.27)

b) Out of these 476 companies

140 companies, gave a negative return.

c) Out of the balance 336 companies, 46 companies gave single-digit returns

d) Out of the balance 290 companies, 101 companies gave a return between 10-30%

e) Out of the balance 189 companies, 55 gave returns between 30-50%

There was an Asura, Kaumasura, who was doing penance to please Shiva and get a boon. To prevent him from asking for a boon, Devi Saraswati made him dumb (hence called Mookasur)
Later, Adi Parashakti slayed him and came to be called Mookambika.


It is said that Adi Shankaracharya had a vision in which Devi agreed to follow him provided he did not look back. He kept walking and was assured of her presence due to the sound of anklets. When he reached here in Kollur, he turned back as the sound of anklets had stopped.


So Devi stayed here and merged with the lingam. The place came to be called Mookambika Kshetram.
The linga has integrated on it’s left side MahaKali, Maha Lakshmi and Maha Saraswathi and on the right side- Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva.


A swarna rekha (gold line) divides this linga into left and right portion. Adi Shakthi in this Udhbhavlinga form appears only here.
Devi sits in padmasana and has 4 hands.
Adi Shankaracharya installed the Sri Chakra in front of Devi and also composed the Soundarya Lahiri here.

1/OK, I should really write another thread about university-centric regional development, because I think people often make some (very understandable) mistakes when thinking about this issue.

2/The biggest myth, I think, is that universities help regions by educating locals as undergraduates.

Skeptics of universities say: "But most of the people who graduate end up leaving."

3/In fact, most of what a university does for a regional economy is NOT about educating local kids.

Educating local kids is good for the nation, but doesn't help a region much.

The way a university helps a region is through

4/Undergraduates usually leave town after graduation.

But university RESEARCH pulls in OTHER smart people from other regions, and they stay there.

Here's a paper showing that this is the main way universities increase a region's human capital:

5/Research also pulls in business investment.

Companies want to partner with university labs, so they can commercialize the technologies the labs produce. So they invest in the labs, and sometimes they even put their offices in the town.

Trump is gonna let the Mueller investigation end all on it's own. It's obvious. All the hysteria of the past 2 weeks about his supposed impending firing of Mueller was a distraction. He was never going to fire Mueller and he's not going to


Mueller's officially end his investigation all on his own and he's gonna say he found no evidence of Trump campaign/Russian collusion during the 2016 election.

Democrats & DNC Media are going to LITERALLY have nothing coherent to say in response to that.

Mueller's team was 100% partisan.

That's why it's brilliant. NOBODY will be able to claim this team of partisan Democrats didn't go the EXTRA 20 MILES looking for ANY evidence they could find of Trump campaign/Russian collusion during the 2016 election

They looked high.

They looked low.

They looked underneath every rock, behind every tree, into every bush.

And they found...NOTHING.

Those saying Mueller will file obstruction charges against Trump: laughable.

What documents did Trump tell the Mueller team it couldn't have? What witnesses were withheld and never interviewed?

THERE WEREN'T ANY.

Mueller got full 100% cooperation as the record will show.
