Man Utd 3 v 2 Liverpool — Tactics #MUFC

 In this thread, we'll look at couple of the highlights and tactical tweaks both teams used to attack each other. We'll look at Man Utd's mistakes that lead to the goals as well. #MUFC
Right from the off, Liverpool looked to hurt United with quick switches of play to catch out their out of possession 442 setup. A quick switched ball from Robertson to TAA catches Rashford, Shaw and Maguire OOP & force them to adjust quickly. Rashford is vital here for TAA's run.
United looked to do the same but with Rashford. Switch the play or drag Liverpool out, find Rashford, and Rashford looks for Cavani and/or Greenwood. Liverpool adopt a very highline as they usually have the possession, so this can be exploited heavily. LIV: 442 OOP. #MUFC
Notice where Firmino is. Liverpool used the same idea of overloading the midfield to create 4v3. United adapted at Anfield and had one of the wingers tuck when the ball is on the far-side. Look at Rashford. #MUFC
Why Donny and not Bruno? Donny can do a man marking job more effectively than Bruno. Thiago enjoyed a lot of space at Anfield until #mufc started denying him space with Fred. This time Donny marked their their pivot effectively. It forced LIV to play through flanks or 8s to drop.
United's FBs usually get doubled up on because their wingers don't drop as often as they should. However last night, till about the 60th minute, they did that effectively. Look at Rashford's position and Greenwood's run back to cover AWB's back post from Robertson's run. #MUFC
1st Goal. A moment of extreme sloppiness from United in their shape. Goals are almost always never a 1 man mistake. It's a chain and the chain started with Cavani and Donny. They got dragged too far out and left a lot of space between them and the 2nd line. Wijnaldum capitalized.
Again the distance between the 2nd line and the 3rd line was bigger than it should be. Look at the space Milner and Firmino had (2nd image prev tweet). Because United lost compactness, it became much harder for Scott and Pogba to cover properly. TAA gave Rashford the slip. #MUFC
Now Shaw has 2 choices to make, notice he sees TAA, he was waiting to see if Firmino will play Salah or TAA in. Instantly, this gives both players a better reaction time than Shaw. Lindelof read this play wrong thus adjusted his body position in the wrong way to deal with this.
Again #mufc were switched to MR10, & when a run was not on. MR10 waited for Shaw's underlap to create 2v1 v TAA. Same as LIV do on the opposite end. #MUFC switched to AWB as well but it was too much to ask of the FB - run the length of the pitch to get on the end of a switch.
At Anfield, MR10 was caught offside 6x. He was rushing things too much & inevitably cost #mufc chances but yesterday, he was more calm & made his runs with cleverness. Here instead of running straight, he ran inwards first then curved which kept him onside with Fabinho.
Liverpool were getting nowhere with Thiago man-marked & their FBs covered by Rashford & Greenwood (for the most part). Robertson moved inward as an inverted FB, while Milner started making diagonal runs that won't be tracked by AWB or Greenwood. Milner chance. #MUFC
1/2 8s dropped to piv. with Thiago to give VdB trouble while 1/2 8 pushed up with ST to pin the FB.
This did 2 things:

1. created a 3v1 v Shaw.
2. Gave Thiago more space to operate.

#mufc dealt well with PP & MR shifting to cover quick.+ Thiago's long passes were unsuccessful.
LIV 2nd (1st was a goal) biggest chance came from #mufc losing possession in mid AGAIN. Fred here got brushed over & it created a CA with 4v3 or 5v4 (however you look at it). Salah could have scored a hattrick but bad finishing & good positioning from Henderson saved #mufc.
Greenwood & Donny were taken out for Fred & Bruno.

1. More mobility in mid.
2. VdB was losing his marker & not effective in final 3rd.
3. Roberstson & TAA were getting a lot space as MG & MR stopped tracking back as much.
4. PP6 & Fernandes were shift wide mid OOP.

Overall United matched Liverpool both tactically & intensity wise - par a couple of mistakes & a scare after Liverpool equalized. Fine margins at the highest level. A moment of lack of concentration cost United the 1st goal. It takes a moment.

When Bruno arrived at Old Trafford, @ManUtd was sitting at 5th on the table - six points behind Chelsea and fourteen behind Leicester! The image given below explains why United had to sign the Portuguese and how he turned the table around pretty much single-handedly.


United manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer mostly plays in a 4-2-3-1 formation with Bruno Fernandes as the player behind the striker. At times, Solskjaer has employed Fernandes as the highest central midfielder behind the two strikers in a 4-1-2-1-2 setup.

In general, like most other creative midfielders, Bruno Fernandes tries to occupy the gap in between the opposition’s midfield line and defensive line. He often drifts to both sides as well, to support the wide players.

Watching this play sent me down a memory hole that gave me goosebumps as well as a pang of guilt. Let me explain. A THREAD!


In 2011, I was hosting the ESPYs. Marshawn’s run was nominated for Best Play, an award that was voted on by fans online. It was considered a front runner if not a lock.

Two days before the show, we're all watching the US/Brazil game in the Women’s World Cup. In the 122 minute Abby Wambach scored a header from a brilliant cross via Megan Rapinoe. I asked ESPN’s estimable producer, the late, great Maura Mandt if we could add it to the nominees.

The best thing about the ESPYs is, unlike other award shows that take themselves too seriously, there is a “fuck it, why not” attitude so Maura just made it happen. Maura was great at making things happen. Want another example?

One of the highlights of the ESPYs is the Arthur Ashe Courage Award. When my son Ashe was born Maura gifted him this fake ESPY for BEST CHILD NAMED ASHE. I am confident this is the only ESPY anyone related to me will ever win.

WARRIORS-CLIPPERS REWATCH THREAD

Okay, thought I would get into the Warriors' unbelievable comeback win over the Clippers last night. Let's dig in.

Steph Curry's first 3 of the night came off an unnecessary Nicolas Batum gamble. Shouldn't have gone for the deflection.


This is a good use of Curry as an inbounder in ATOs. Leveraging his gravity to get Oubre a drive to the rim from a fake handoff, made easier by the Clippers not having anyone to help on the drive.


Really crafty pushoff by Curry on Patrick Beverley here. Forces Beverley under Looney's screen, and that's all the space Curry needs.


Hedging/trapping Curry has become the norm now, especially with the kind of roster Curry has to work with (i.e., average-to-below-average shooting).

I absolutely love this wrinkle they've put in to prevent hedging/trapping. Somewhat of a screen-the-screener/DHO action.


I've noticed Kerr likes to go with a 2-2-1 zone press with the 2nd unit every now and then. Really cuts into the shot clock and forces the opposing offense to rush. Case in point: Reggie Jackson doing god-knows-what and dribbling into nothingness. Warriors eventually force a TO.

उनकी उपस्थिति में ही सारा परिवार बहुत देर तक जी भर बातें करता ।फिर भरत को ध्यान आया कि भैया-भाभी को भी एकांत मिलना चाहिए ।उर्मिला को देख भी उनके मन में हूक उठती थी कि इस पतिव्रता को भी अपने पति का सानिध्य चाहिए ।

एक दिन भरत ने हनुमान जी से कहा,"हे पवनपुत्र! सीता भाभी को राम भैया के साथ एकांत में रहने का भी अधिकार प्राप्त है ।क्या आपको उनके माथे पर सिन्दूर नहीं दिखता?इसलिए संध्या पश्चात आप राम भैया को कृप्या अकेला छोड़ दिया करें "।
ये सुनकर हनुमान आश्चर्यचकित रह गए और सीता माता के पास गए ।


माता से हनुमान ने पूछा,"माता आप अपने माथे पर सिन्दूर क्यों लगाती हैं।" यह सुनकर सीता माता बोलीं,"स्त्री अपने माथे पर सिन्दूर लगाती है तो उसके पति की आयु में वृद्धि होती है और वह स्वस्थ रहते हैं "। फिर हनुमान जी प्रभु राम के पास गए ।

💬 I often get Q’s like these:

How did you get your first customers for WIP? How did you grow BetaList’s traffic? Etc.

Makers are looking to reverse-engineer success. I see it everywhere.

I don’t think it works that way and the answers to those questions are mostly useless. 💥

I have built dozens of different products over the last couple of years. The vast majority failed. 😭

Surely if I know the answers to these questions, but still fail over and over again, these answers aren’t that useful. 🤷‍♀️

So what’s a better question to ask? 🤔

99.9% of the questions I receive are about the products that did well. In a way that makes sense, because we quickly forget about those that didn’t succeed.

🧠 This is known as survivorship bias.

Focusing on what survived, while ignoring what made it survive in the first place.

The real question, what you really want to know, is this:

What makes @WIP, @BetaList, and to some extent @AllStartupJobs succeed where my countless other attempts failed?

What separates a failed product 👎 from a successful product 👍?

Honestly, I don’t know. I wish I did.

It’s like Steve Jobs said “I’ll know it when I see it.” 👀

Same is true when we make products. We don’t know upfront what will work. But once we see an inkling of a product that does have potential, it’s not that hard to spot.
