It always enrages me how when white people engage in criminal activity, other white people look for the social or systemic reasons to “explain” why a white person did a bad thing and why it’s not really their fault.

Yet, these same individuals cast aspersions on the entire Black race when one Black person commits a crime. There’s no systemic or social analysis for Black people, no. Instead they make crimes committed by Black people pathological, a virtue of our very Blackness.
Whiteness affords itself the privilege of individualism such that when white people commit crimes, the entire white race isn’t implicated. When a white person commits a crime, they “strayed from their true nature.” When a Black person commits a crime, “it is our true nature.”
That’s because in the white racial imagination, whiteness is a state of pure and unassailable innocence, and it can only be imagined as such if it casts Blackness in the role of pure and immutable evil.
This explains why laws and all other institutional rules, customs, traditions, and practices are applied differently based on race—negatively impacting, stigmatizing, traumatizing, and killing Black people.
As long as white supremacist capitalist patriarchy is the ruling power structure, as long as white supremacist capitalist patriarchs are the ruling caste, as long as people aspire to be whatever version of white supremacist capitalist patriarchs they can be...
Black people and other marginalized people will have no quarter and no sanctuary anywhere in this current state of existence.
A measuring stick for how depraved a society is (and how antipathetic a people are): the, compulsory, arrogant, unabashed, stoic, pious, and shameless way in which it points out the twig in the eye of others while ignoring the oar in its own.
White supremacist capitalist patriarchy is the danger. They ignore even their own observations of this fact because accountability and self-implication are beyond whiteness’s ability to comprehend much less act upon.

If this shit was about "economics," why are these white people attacking the party of the people who are trying to provide them a safety net rather than the party hoarding the wealth? Because the former is coded Black and the latter is coded white. That's why.

Imagine if Christians actually had to live according to their Bibles.

Imagine if Christians actually sacrificed themselves for the good of those they considered their enemies, with no thought of any recompense or reward, but only to honor the essential humanity of all people.

Imagine if Christians sold all their possessions and gave it to the poor.

Imagine if they relentlessly stood up for the widow, the orphan, and the foreigner.

Imagine if they worshipped a God whose response to political power was to reject it.

Or cancelled all debt owed them?

Imagine if the primary orientation of Christians was what others needed, not what they deserved.

Imagine Christians with no interest in protecting what they had.

Imagine Christians who made room for other beliefs, and honored the truths they found there.

Imagine Christians who saved their forgiveness and mercy for others, rather than saving it for themselves.

Whose empathy went first to the abused, not the abuser.

Who didn't see tax as theft; who didn't need to control distribution of public good to the deserving.

I just finished Eric Adler's The Battle of the Classics, and wanted to say something about Joel Christiansen's review linked below. I am not sure what motivates the review (I speculate a bit below), but it gives a very misleading impression of the book. 1/x

The meat of the criticism is that the history Adler gives is insufficiently critical. Adler describes a few figures who had a great influence on how the modern US university was formed. It's certainly critical: it focuses on the social Darwinism of these figures. 2/x

Other insinuations and suggestions in the review seem wildly off the mark, distorted, or inappropriate-- for example, that the book is clickbaity (it is scholarly) or conservative (hardly) or connected to the events at the Capitol (give me a break). 3/x

The core question: in what sense is classics inherently racist? Classics is old. On Adler's account, it begins in ancient Rome and is revived in the Renaissance. Slavery (Christiansen's primary concern) is also very old. Let's say classics is an education for slaveowners. 4/x

It's worth remembering that literacy itself is elite throughout most of this history. Literacy is, then, also the education of slaveowners. We can honor oral and musical traditions without denying that literacy is, generally, good. 5/x
