The Republican Party doesn't understand the situation it is in. The blowback for what happened on January 6th has only begun. There is no way any politician or political organization even remotely connected to the incident can come out of this with their reputations intact. 1/

The smart ones are already trying to perform acts of contrition but even they are miscalculating. They are not going far enough. Not even close. 2/
I’m not talking about how it might be a little more difficult to do fundraising in the future. I’m talking about fraternal organizations expelling members; professional credentials being revoked; companies cutting business ties; forced resignations from positions of authority. 3/
Not to mention the actual legal prosecutions and civil lawsuits they will have to face. There will be many. Some of them will succeed. 4/
And then there’s the response from the actual voters themselves. The Democrats are going to be able to hold this over the Republican’s heads for YEARS TO COME. This will not have all blown over by mid-terms in 2022 or even by the next presidential election in 2024. 5/
It will be 2026 at the earliest and that’s if and only if Republicans make an all-out effort to rehabilitate their image. They weren’t willing to do it before, seem reluctant to do it now and may not be capable of doing it even if they try. 6/
It’s not just the fallout from a bungled insurrection attempt that they will have to deal with. We are on track for 400,000 people to die by the time Joe Biden takes office. They all died under a Republican administration. 7/
An administration that often didn’t take the pandemic seriously and when it did was incompetent in responding to it. Against this alone the Republicans might have been able to hold their ground but on top of the January 6th Insurrection? There is no way they live this down. 8/
The smart centrist Republicans will declare themselves as independent or join the Blue Dog Democrats as soon as possible. The “Never Trumpers” will be able to partially disavow everything that has happened and will likely form the core of a new traditional conservative party. 9/
The rest of them? Some Trump-centered Tea Party thing that will rise up. Trump will fleece the rubes and line his pockets with their money but they will never be an effective force in American politics. Thank God. Now let's hope the Democrats don't completely screw things up. 10/
This is the Democrat's chance to prove that they are the party of effective governance. Our nation desperately needs that right now. I hope they are up to the task. 11/11

I think a plausible explanation is that whatever Corbyn says or does, his critics will denounce - no matter how much hypocrisy it necessitates.

Corbyn opposes the exploitation of foreign sweatshop-workers - Labour MPs complain he's like Nigel

He speaks up in defence of migrants - Labour MPs whinge that he's not listening to the public's very real concerns about immigration:

He's wrong to prioritise Labour Party members over the public:
