The Arhtiyas (Middlemen) of Punjab

The Arhtiyas of Punjab are political connected.

In July 2017, in a public function the Arhyiyas felicitated Amarinder Singh with the title of ‘Fakhr-e-Quam’(Pride of the Community).

Post that function, the CM had said it would be difficult to waive off the debt owed by farmers to the arhtiyas.

As many as 86% of farmer & 80% of agricultural labours are mired in debt, says a study on Indebtedness among Farmers & Agricultural Labourers in Rural Punjab.

Its authors, researchers at Punjabi University, Patiala, say over a fifth of that debt was owed to commission agents and moneylenders.

No less than 8,294 farmers took their own lives between 2000 & 2015, says a study presented last year before the Vidhan Sabha’s Committee.

6,373 agricultural labourers also killed themselves in the same period. And that was in just six of the state’s 22 districts.

The study, commissioned by the state government’s revenue department, found that 83 per cent of all these suicides were largely debt-driven.

An estimate in the year 2012-13 indicated that every Arhitya/ Middle men/ Commission agent earned on a average of 6.7 Lakh on interest payments.

Their average other income excluding commissions & MSP cuts per year is 12 Lakh/ Annum. They receive 1370 Cr in interest every year

As we end 2020, it is a good time to look back at an explicitly unconstitutional law, which is brandished with utmost impunity. #TooMuchDemocracy?

Some complaints are more important than others. Priorities?

I’ve finally managed to get through the Arnab Goswami Chatgate pdf. Everyone has already highlighted those portions that needed highlighting. I have a slightly different tack.

1. The messages tell me that news is a carefully constructed consumer product.

This is something we all already know but it’s nice to see confirmation. Events are presented in the high-decibel manner that has become the standard because the product is crying for attention.

2. These folks don’t care about what has actually happened and to whom. They’re

callous about it. Their eye is firmly on the ratings. There is no empathy in their conversation. The empathy on screen is constructed.

3. Overall the chats reveal varying degrees of competition between channels to get real close to those in office. One thing that stood out

is reference to the PMO asking who leaked a particular story. Even the state doesn’t have control over its disinformation. Power centers within the state seem to be disseminating different info to their preferred reporters or channels.

This was fully flagged in an old piece I had co-authored on Pulwama in 2019. How there was so much contradictory information about one singular incident.

4. The real issue then is what about journalism. Is this even journalism or should we be calling it something else?

Covid has brought this digital infrastructure to the fore and now it’s ready for phase2 with auto-debit & embedded lending

5/n India’s telecom boom kicked off on the back of creating pre-paid transactions.

The Telcos went into the nooks & corners of the country and activated customers.

This was pre-Aadhaar, with limited trust & lending history, we had no choice but to ask people to pay first.

1. Punjabi Farmers take away approx. 55% of Country's Budget on MSP Proc. Country's budget on Food Grain procurement is not UNLIMITED! The Govt can procure only as much as it needs for PDS & buffer stock.

So while only 6% of the country's total farming population lives in Punjab, it is encashing 55% of entire country's budget meant for grain proc.
Thus a disproportionate share of income from Taxes collected by Govt from all other States is eff spent on Punjab Farmers.

What about farmers of other states?

Why should GOI not purchase proportionately from 94% Farmers of other states?!

If some 'Annadata' / 'I'm with Farmer' wants to say that Govt should incr MSP procurement from other states also, then he is conning you!

GOI can proc only ltd qty as per budget for PDS. Govt simply doesnt have the money to procure ALL grain prod in India.

The 'Im with farmer'/ 'Annadata' types must also agitat e asking Govt. to hugely incr Taxes & GST in order to raise money for making UNLTD proc at MSP.

Since 2014 he misused the central machinery to threaten and bully @AIADMKOfficial after breaking them into two. It's almost 6 years and he has not delivered what he had promised to the centre.
