It is not allowed for one to worship anyone except Allah. Dua is a form of worship. We must call upon Allah alone

It says in Surah Jinn verse 18

“And the masaajid are for Allaah (Alone), so do not call upon anyone along with Allaah.”

Abdullah bin Mas’ud (radiyallaahu ‘anhu) said: “People used to make du’aa to the Angels, and ‘Uzayr and al-Maseeh (the Messiah, Isa bin Maryam, alayhis salaam), so Allaah the Most High said:

Those whom you call upon, they try to get close to Me just like you try to gain closeness to Me.
And they hope for My Mercy just like you hope for My Mercy, and they fear My Punishment just like you fear My Punishment.

Allah سُبْحَٰنَهُۥ وَتَعَٰلَىٰ also said “They (the Jews and Christians) took their rabbis and their monks to be their lords (arbaab) besides Allaah (by obeying them in things which they made lawful or unlawful according to their own desires without being ordered by Allaah),

and (they also took as their Lord) Al-Maseeh (the Messiah), son of Maryam, while they were not commanded to worship none but One Ilaah. Laa ilaaha illaa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped in truth but He).

And the Prophet (Sallallaahu ‘alayhi wasallam) said: “Let one of you not say: what Allaah willed and what Muhammad willed. But (instead) say: what Allaah willed, then Muhammad.”

And a man said to him: “What Allaah has willed and what you have willed.” So he said: “Are you making me a rival with Allaah?! Rather (say) : What Allaah Alone has willed.”

And he said (‘Alayhis-Salaam) : “Do not exaggerate in praising me like the Christians exaggerated in the praise of ‘Eesaa Ibn Maryam. Indeed I am only a servant of Allaah, so say (regarding me): Servant of Allaah and His Messenger.”

And likewise it is not allowed for anyone to swear an oath by the grave of his father [nor by his father’s life], nor by his own life. And it is not allowed for anyone from Allaah’s creation to swear by the life of his shaykh, and not by the life of his head,(18/25)
nor the life of his shaykh’s head, and not by the bounty of the sultaan, nor by the sword, nor by other than Allaah the Most High. Allaah’s Messenger (Sallallaahu ‘alayhi wasallam) said: “Whoever swears (an oath) then let him swear by Allaah or let him remain quiet.”(19/25)

And he said (ﷺ ): “Whoever swears by other than Allaah, then he has committed shirk with Him.” Reported by at-Tirmidhee and he said: a saheeh hadeeth

And Abdullah bin Mas’ud(radiyallaahu ‘anhu) said: “That I swear by Allaah while lying is more beloved to me than I swear by other than Him while telling the truth.”

And that is because if he swore by Allaah, then he has combined the sin of al-Kadhib (lying) along with the good deed of Tawheed. And if he were to swear by other than Him,

he would have combined along with as-Sidq (truthfulness) the sin of shirk, and Tawheed is greater than as-Sidq, and shirk is greater than al-Kadhib.

Survivorship Bias 101

History is written by the victors. But if we exclusively focus on these successes, we allow survivorship bias to distort our understanding of the world.

But what is "survivorship bias" and how does it work?

1/ First, a few definitions.

Survivorship bias is the logical error of concentrating on survivors (successes) and ignoring casualties (failures).

When we do so, we miss the true "base rates" of survival (the actual probability of success) and arrive at flawed conclusions.

2/ When we completely ignore failures, we lose our ability to correctly identify the differences between successes and failures.

Put simply, exclusively focusing on successes may actually inhibit our ability to identify (and replicate) the actions that led to such success.


3/ Cicero wrote on the topic over 2,000 years ago.

An atheist named Diagoras is shown portraits of people who prayed and were saved from death at sea as proof of God's existence.

Diagoras replies, "I see those who were saved, but where are those painted who were shipwrecked?"


4/ Cicero cuts right to the point - we cannot conclude that prayer led to being saved from the sea if we ignore those who prayed and then drowned.

Survivorship bias can lead to a deeply-flawed understanding of cause-and-effect relationships.

The common understanding of propaganda is that it is intended to brainwash the masses. Supposedly, people get exposed to the same message repeatedly and over time come to believe in whatever nonsense authoritarians want them to believe /1

And yet authoritarians often broadcast silly, unpersuasive propaganda.

Political scientist Haifeng Huang writes that the purpose of propaganda is not to brainwash people, but to instill fear in them /2


When people are bombarded with propaganda everywhere they look, they are reminded of the strength of the regime.

The vast amount of resources authoritarians spend to display their message in every corner of the public square is a costly demonstration of their power /3

In fact, the overt silliness of authoritarian propaganda is part of the point. Propaganda is designed to be silly so that people can instantly recognize it when they see it


Propaganda is intended to instill fear in people, not brainwash them.

The message is: You might not believe in pro-regime values or attitudes. But we will make sure you are too frightened to do anything about it.

💬 I often get Q’s like these:

How did you get your first customers for WIP? How did you grow BetaList’s traffic? Etc.

Makers are looking to reverse-engineer success. I see it everywhere.

I don’t think it works that way and the answers to those questions are mostly useless. 💥

I have built dozens of different products over the last couple of years. The vast majority failed. 😭

Surely if I know the answers to these questions, but still fail over and over again, these answers aren’t that useful. 🤷‍♀️

So what’s a better question to ask? 🤔

99.9% of the questions I receive are about the products that did well. In a way that makes sense, because we quickly forget about those that didn’t succeed.

🧠 This is known as survivorship bias.

Focusing on what survived, while ignoring what made it survive in the first place.

The real question, what you really want to know, is this:

What makes @WIP, @BetaList, and to some extent @AllStartupJobs succeed where my countless other attempts failed?

What separates a failed product 👎 from a successful product 👍?

Honestly, I don’t know. I wish I did.

It’s like Steve Jobs said “I’ll know it when I see it.” 👀

Same is true when we make products. We don’t know upfront what will work. But once we see an inkling of a product that does have potential, it’s not that hard to spot.

I'm still happy that I launched a paid app bcs it involved extra work:

- backend for processing payments (+ permissions, webhooks, etc)
- integration with payment processor
- UI for license activation in Electron
- machine activation limit
- autoupdates
- mailgun emails

etc.

These things seemed super scary at first. I always thought it was way too much work and something would break. But I'm glad I persisted. So far the only problem I have is that mailgun is not delivering the license keys to certain domains like https://t.co/6Bqn0FUYXo etc. 👌

Mahadev himself narrated the story of Ekadash Mukhi Hanuman ji to Maa Parvati. Once a great monster named Kalkarmukh performed the severe penance of Brahma ji.


Pleased with the austerity of the demon, Brahma ji gave him a boon that the person who will have eleven Heads like you and who was born on the day of your birth, only he/she will be able to kill you. No one else will kill you.


After getting a boon from Brahma ji, Kalkarmukh created a ruckus in all three lok. He invaded Swarg and snatched all the rights of the Devtas and became himself the king of Swarg.


All Devtagan came to Shri Rama and asked him for help. Hearing the agony of the Devtagan, Shri Ram called his supreme devotee Hanuman ji and said, "Pawan Putra, Sankatmochan".
