“We say that Ambal is the embodiment of kindness and compassion. At the end of Lalitha Sahasranamam she is described as “Avyaaja karunaamoorthi” – one who showers kindness and compassion without any reason. However there are countless difficulties and hardships in

 the world. Only I know that. People who come to me talk of the various difficulties faced by them in the world. Even people who do poojas, undertake pilgrimage, take bath in holy waters are afflicted with problems. During such times, many of them cry their heart out to me and
feel depressed saying, “In spite of all the poojas and my devotion, Ambal has only been giving me difficulties and hardships! You call her as the embodiment of compassion, but in my case she is blind”. They even get angry with Ambal. However, if you ask me, difficulties and
hardships are given because of her compassion; sometimes I feel this is the highest form of her compassion. We look at our good deeds of the present and argue if it is justified for us to be faced with so many difficulties. We curse the gods. But have we all done only good things
regardless of who we are? If we self introspect deeply we will know the number of sins (Paapam) that we have committed; if not physically the great sins we have committed by way of thoughts will be obvious. These are of the present – that is, of this life. We don’t know what we
did in the previous life. It is Ambal’s law for a particular plant to germinate from a particular seed. We sow the seeds in the previous life; and reap the harvest/difficulties in this life. If we were to be aware of all the sins and wrong deeds that we have committed, we may
realize that the difficulty Ambal is giving now is perhaps not commensurate. Then we ourselves will repent, “In the middle of all these difficulties, is it not out of her profuse compassion that she helps us to think of her to attain salvation! Even though we are not worthy, is
she not showering her kindness on us! Without understanding this, to blame her, is gross injustice. Isn’t it?” We will also realize that we are committing more mistakes by cursing her now. Child eats sand. Mother ties his hands with a cloth. Child gets very angry. “What a mother!
She has no kindness or love. She is my worst enemy” thinks the child. Did the mother tie him up for no reason? Does she not have concern for the child? Child being his own enemy thinks of the mother as his enemy. However great we may be, whatever may be our accomplishments, we
are still like this child. She is punishing us for our past mistakes, but it is difficult for us to accept it. We are not able to redeem ourselves from that. We don’t have that power. We blame Her stating that She has tied us up. Only to prevent us from repeating the same mistake
as the child eating the sand, the supreme mother has tied us up with difficulties. When hard times confront us we should think, “These are the consequences of our past mistakes, hence if we repeat mistakes we will continue to face such difficulties in this life”. We should be
clear that we should pray to her to bless us with the intelligence to avoid doing such mistakes.
When She blesses us with comforts which please us we think of Her as being compassionate. Only because She blesses us with them even though we are not worthy, Her kindness is one
which has no reason. Difficulty is also Her kindness for a particular reason. The mistake we did in the past is the reason for that. She gives these difficulties for us to realize that we should not continue to do that and should become good. Whatever we consider as good for us
can also cause problems. Hence, I feel that to give us difficulties with the intention to correct ourselves is a greater kindness than bestowing us with things that we think are comfortable and good for us. If to bless us with comforts without any reason is an act of her natural
innate kindness, I feel that her kindness in blessing us with difficulties with the intention of correcting us is of a higher order. We are able to see only a portion. We are not aware of the past and future. Hence seeing these adversities in this small interval, we feel they are
harmful and detrimental to us. If we come to know of the past, present and future, we will realize that she never does anything that is adverse to us. If we know our past deeds, and the good that will result from our current difficulties, we wouldn’t do like this. She has kept
these things hidden from us. This is also Her play. In spite of these limitations, if man has so much arrogance and pride, if he were to be aware of the past, present and future, there would be no limit to his atrocities. She has kept it so, so that he remains under control.
Realising that we are not aware of the past and future we can rely on the great sages who are aware of the past, present, and the future. Looking at the transactions in the world based on cause and effect we can realize that our human life also should be like this; if we are
suffering there should be a reason for it; if we should not suffer like this again, we have to surrender to Her”.
Jaya Jaya Shankara Hara Hara Shankara!

purification. Somehow although we are an orthodox family, I could not do this. Soon after my return I had to undergo surgery for hernia. Then I got married. Later I became very busy in hospital work and I could never get the time to plan a trip to Rameswaram. Sometime in 1975 I

went to Kancheepuram with my younger sister and niece to have darsanam of Maha Periyava. By that time I had already been abroad several times. An elderly Brahmin gentleman who had just come from Nigeria was present too to have darshan. There was a crowd of about sixty or seventy

We Hindus regard both Shiva and Vishnu as the same and this is evident from the fact that in the ecstasy of our devotion, whether were are alone or are in groups, we exclaim "Haro-Hara" and "Govinda-Govinda", which (whose) names come to our lips spontaneously. The holy


days of Shivaratri and Janmashtami are divided from each other by exactly 180 days, and this seems to indicate that God in His aspect as Shiva protects us during one-half of the year, and in His aspect as Vishnu, in the other half. The traditional practice of boys and girls

collecting oil for their vigil on Shivaratri and Janmashtami nights, singing in chorus a song which means that Shivaratri and Sri Jayanti are the same, is another pointer to the identity of these two manifestations of the Divine. Apachaaranivrtti must precede Anugraha -

eradication of sins must precede blessings. So God as Hara destroy the sins of His devotees, while as Govinda, He protects them from harm. The expressions Hara-Hara and Govinda-Govinda come to children effortlessly. It is significant that Sri Shankara composed Bhaja Govindam when

he was a child and Sri Sambandar sang that Hara naama should envelop the world, when he too was a child. The Upanishads speak of God as Uma-sameta-Parameswara, and it is worthy of note that all children refer to God as Ummachi, which is obviously a contraction for Uma-Maheshwara.

There is an organisation in America called the Paul Brunton mission, extolling the British journalist who came to see the Sages here. Brunton had Sri Maha Periyava’s darshan and on his advice went to Ramana Maharishi whose gracious glance he received. Every year


the students who were members of this association, would visit Kanchipuram and stay on for 10 or 15 days, immersing themselves in Periyava’s blissful darshan. The Group had come as usual one year. One day, Periyava was seated under the Night-flowering jasmine (Pavazhamalli) tree,

which used to be in SriMatham in those days and was giving them the darshan. Periyava was sitting with his eyes closed. The American boys were seated around Periyava with their eyes closed in Meditation. It was very silent, not a whisper anywhere. The attendants Balu Mama and

Vedapuri Mama moved away and came out of SriMatham. A car came to stop there. A middle-aged couple and their three children got down. It was clear from the clothes they wore that the children were thoroughly westernised. They looked at Balu Mama and Vedapuri Mama who were

standing there. Old, discoloured dhoties, hair knotted in a tuft, stripes of sacred ash, rudraksha beads around their neck. The ultra-modern kids found them amusing. “Who are these ancients? Some saints around here it seems? Wonder if he too is like this? Dirty people,

Once Maha Periyava undertook his divya darshana yatra with His entourage to Sri Saila kshetra which is known as the 'Dakshina Kailash'. When they reached Kurnool, Acharyal was given a grand reception at the borders of the


city. Sri Maha Periyava was accommodated in a bhajan mandapa where He gave a discourse on Sanatana Dharma in Telugu to the large gathering of devotees. At the end of the lecture, He gave the devotees His blessings and prasadam and continued on His yatra. After they passed a

distance of seven or eight miles, a fertile Zamin village was sighted. All the people in the village with their family and children came to the boundary of the village and welcomed Maha Periyava with purna kumbham. Thereafter, the Zamindar of the village prayed to Sri Maha

Periyava with humility: "Our village should become holy, sanctified by the holy feet of Maha Swamigal. You should stay here for a few days. There is a large choultry here with facilities for your stay and puja punaskarya. A clean puskarani is also nearby." The entire village

prostrated to Maha Periyava and prayed. Acharyal was moved by their Atmarta bhakti. He gave them His anugraha and announced to their immense happiness that He would stay with them for twenty one days. The village wore a festive look on the next morning. Arrangements for the

2. Sandu (三 毒), Jiang Cheng’s sword, refers to the three poisons (triviṣa) in Buddhism; desire (kāma-taṇhā), delusion (bhava-taṇhā) and hatred (vibhava-taṇhā).

These 3 poisons represent the roots of craving (tanha) and are the cause of Dukkha (suffering, pain) and thus result in rebirth.

Interesting that MXTX used this name for one of the characters who suffers, arguably, the worst of these three emotions.

Let folks have their many talents, interests and gifts. Life is far more fun with variety, loves.

A lot of folks have come to know me as an activist & I’m grateful that folks care to know me at all.

But I wasn’t born in 2014. I was a whole teacher, executive, policy person, speaker, arts and culture lover, reader, writer, woman of faith, fashion and more before 4 yrs ago 🤷🏾‍♀️

We rightfully complain that marginalized people are not allowed to be fully human.

But we internalize and transfer our oppression daily. It’s a smog. We all breathe it in & act it out.

And then tell WoC “girl ain’t you supposed to be a _______? Why you doing ____?”

Can I live?

And don’t go reading anything personal into this-this isn’t about me necessarily and it’s no subtweet (I try hard not to do that.)

I’ve just been observing that behavior more and more lately. Especially when it comes to marginalized folks.

Evolution should be our aspiration.

“Can’t knock the hustle” should be our anthem.

As long as someone isn’t bringing active and continual harm, why can’t they explore their many sides?
