Self Sufficient Estate Thread

A topic worth exploring amidst uncertain times. If the grid fails, you will be better off than almost anyone. If we never see its end, you will get fresh nutrient rich produce and a glimpse of the true meaning of life as God planned it.

Consider adding wild fruit/nuts varieties to increase wildgame on your land. It will be your best bet to get meat without having to take care of animals. American wild plums, crab apples or oak comes to mind. All of them double as food or firewood if the situation is dire.
Water management is a priority for self sufficiency. Whether you want a lake with fish or a simple rainwater collection system, it is wise to have a reliable source. The water itself wont have weird chemicals in it, no other will equal it in taste and virtue.
Storing up on vitamins during the winter is essential to your survival, my ancestors learnt it the hard way when they came in the valley of the St Lawrence. Elderberry is probably the most efficient way, being easy to grow and prolific. The medicinal syrup can last 6 months
Buy old manual tools that will last you a lifetime. The standards for tools seem to have gone down quite a bit. You can find really high quality for cheap if you can give them a second life. Look for steel made in Europe or North America in the 80s or earlier.
Thorny Hedges will keep the envious and desperate away. The goal is to redirect traffic to where it can be seen and easily dealt with if needs be. It is biological barbed wire that can even act as food source. Rosa rugosa, Buckthorn, Holly or the beautiful flowering Quince.
Lastly, keep aesthetic as a priority. How someone presents his domain reveals a lot. Create a functional landscape and make it warm your heart when you look at it. An Estate will be a tribute to the land. A farm themed hippy soy pod looks like a tumor and ruin your ideals appeal.
There is a multitude of things I didnt touch in this thread, dont hesitate to add if you know more. Share it with those who might be interested and have a good week!

We know that elite institutions like the one Flier was in (partial) charge of rely on irrelevant status markers like private school education, whiteness, legacy, and ability to charm an old white guy at an interview.

Harvard's discriminatory policies are becoming increasingly well known, across the political spectrum (see, e.g., the recent lawsuit on discrimination against East Asian applications.)

It's refreshing to hear a senior administrator admits to personally opposing policies that attempt to remedy these basic flaws. These are flaws that harm his institution's ability to do cutting-edge research and to serve the public.

Harvard is being eclipsed by institutions that have different ideas about how to run a 21st Century institution. Stanford, for one; the UC system; the "public Ivys".
