In old times, the aborigines of this place were the tribals named Nagas, Pishachas and Yakshas, who used to go in summer towards Tibet and return to Kashmir in winter.

Because of the fear of these tribals, the Brahmins used to depart from the valley before the tribals returned.

Do u know in olden times Kashmir was called Satidesa & was a vast lake ?

Kashmir was once a part of a land that remained submerged in the Tethys Sea for about 900 million years during the Geological Period.

During the Pliocene Age, this area emerged as a vast sweet-water lake covering almost the entire valley of Kashmir. As per findings of the geologists, the age of this ancient lake was more than a million years.

The depth of the alluvium had been nearly 6,000 feet and also the vast Karewa deposits abounding in the area points towards the existence of a vast lake (which nearly was 1000 feet above the present level) that filled the entire length and breadth of the Valley.

The physiography of Kashmir therefore indicates that the Valley and the great lake that preceded was of tectonic origin. This lake was traditionally known as Satisar (The Lake of the Goddess Sati). While referring to Satidesa (Kashmir) and its formation,

PETER PADUKAM - THE LEGEND OF MADURAI MEENAKSHI TEMPLE AND A BRITISH COLLECTOR.

A British Collector named Rous Peter was appointed as Collector of Madurai from 1812 to 1828.

Though a Christian by faith, he respected all faiths including Hinduism and also honored local practice

Collector Peter was the temple administrator of the Meenakshi Amman Temple and conducted all his duties with sincerity and honesty and respected the religious sentiments of all people.

Collector Rous Peter respected and treated people of all faiths equally and this noble trait

earned him the popular nickname ‘Peter Pandian'

Goddess Meenakshi Amman Temple was situated between Collector Peter's residence and office.

Everyday he used to go to the office by his horse and while crossing the temple, he got down from his horse, removed the hat and his shoes

and crossed the whole path on his foot.

Through this small gesture he expressed his reverence to the Goddess!

One day there was a heavy downpour in Madurai city and River Vaigai was in spate.

Collector was sleeping in his residence and was suddenly disturbed and woken up by

the sound of anklets and he left his bed to find out from where the sound had came.

He saw a small girl wearing pattuvastrams (silk garments) and precious ornaments and addressing him as 'Peter come this way'.

SWAMI VIVEKANANDA AND THE FEROCIOUS BEASTS !

One day, he was walking along a lonely path near Varanasi, when a troop of monkeys, quite aggressive, rushed towards him from behind. Vivekananda took to his heels. But could he give the slip to the swift monkeys?

The distance between him and the monkeys was becoming narrower and narrower and he was getting rather panicky. Suddenly he heard a voice of exhortation. A Sadhu or a holy man seated beside the road called out to him:

“Don’t run away. Face the brutes!”

He turned and dared the monkeys to come near him. Taken aback, the monkeys stopped. As Vivekananda stared at them, they slowly dispersed.

Shri Krishna Leela

This is a beautiful story of Guruvayurappan. Once there lived in Guruvayur a poor family. Kitta, his wife & kids were struggling for their daily needs. With only a coconut tree in house, he earned a living by selling coconuts.

Kitta was from a low caste family. He was a great devotee of Guruvayurappan. Everyday before going to work he always prayed infront of a picture of Guruvayurappan in his house. His only wish was to worship at Guruvayur & have annadanam in temple. But he was not allowed there

It was Utsavam time in Guruvayur. From far behind kitta and family worshipped Guruvayurappan. Annadanam was given daily and no one was left empty stomach. Only Kitta didn't receive. That night, it was only Kitta's family who was sleeping without food. After temple nada closed

Shri Krishna, dressed himself as a Brahmin went to temple Kitchen. He packed food and went directly to kitta's house. Reaching Kitta's house, Shri Krishna told he was sent by a cook of Guruvayur temple and gave them the food he packed. Kitta and family was very happy seeing food.

When Kitta finished his food, Brahmin asked it will be better if he get a tender coconut( karikku)to drink. Kitta climbed the tree and gave all coconuts to him. After having 1 tender coconut, the Brahmin asked to bring remaining coconuts to Guruvayur temple the next day.
