In 1967, MLK warned too many whites want democracy for them, dictatorship for Blacks
— Will Bunch Sign Up For My Newsletter (@Will_Bunch) January 17, 2021
2021's Capitol riot was King's nightmare run amok, proving white supremacy is foundational to America.
Can we finally bend the moral arc the right way?
My new column https://t.co/tEs2y6Oxlb
2/ "The white mob that sacked the seat of U.S. government the moment it promised to look more like the real America was the living, contemporary proof of the “hard fact” that King warned about 54 years ago..."
3/ " But the very real gains of the last year... have encountered the harshest law of American physics, that for every step forward on race there is an unequal and often more powerful backlash, so strong in 2021 that it even breached the citadel of our fragile democracy"
4/ "While the Jan. 6 mob may have invoked the spirit of 1776, it was propelled instead by the cruel, icy currents of 1619, the year that the first slave ship reached our soil."
5/ "Some 80 years of white authoritarian government in the Deep South mocked any spirit of 1776."

I'm following @freep's live coverage of the Michigan Capitol here.
Where I am seeing small groups-- average of 3-5 people-- it's Boogaloo Boys. In Columbus, Ohio, and Salem, Oregon, for example.
.@jordangreentcb reports a dozen rightwing types skulking around in Raleigh, North Carolina, which is interesting.
I’m in downtown Raleigh w/ @acrider. We spotted roughly a dozen ppl in the parking lot of the State Library of NC across street from Governor’s Mansion. 1 wearing a Blackwater jacket, others in camo. They got in a vehicle & left when we spotted them. Photos by @acrider #J17 pic.twitter.com/fBKrnZ9IjW

.@jason_a_w is live-tweeting five Boogaloo Boys in Salem, Oregon. As he notes, they’re outnumbered 3:1 by the journalists on scene.
In Salem, OR today for a Capitol protest. Only attendees thus far are five boogaoloo bois pic.twitter.com/t2qqaZ4u2d

In New Jersey, @DLamontJenkins reports “one old guy, and he isn’t anywhere near the Statehouse, and he’s pissed.”

What - and who - pushed her into thinking it was the right thing to do.
You might want to consider that many people like her are still out there.
Unpopular opinion, perhaps, but Babbit had it coming.

Crazy thought, but what if we started focusing our efforts on fighting the sources of disinformation that pushed Ashli over the edge.
What if we taught people how to spot propaganda -- especially from their own political side?
If you're left leaning - like me - consider left wing propaganda.
(What? There's no such thing!)
Sure there is. The left scares its voters, same as the right.
(Yeah, but we scare them about REAL crises, not racist nonsense.)
Hmm.
The core idea isn't about left vs right. It's about power, and manipulating people to obtain that power.
And no, I'm not saying that #BothSides practice this to the same degree.
I'm saying we all have blind spots when we agree with what's being said and who's saying it.
When you're inclined to believe some thing A, it might be easy to get you to believe a related thing B. Then thing C, and D, and so on.
Until eventually you believe thing Q.
And as crazy as thing Q is, there are a disturbingly large number of letters that come after it.
NEW BUILD HOUSING: Buildings are the biggest emitters of carbon emissions in Birmingham. Raising standards of all new homes in the city will be an important part of achieving net zero carbon. We will deliver 7,000 environmentally-sustainable social homes by 2031. (2/11)
RETROFIT HOUSING: Refurbishing existing housing with energy efficient solutions will be a significant undertaking. We continue to lobby government for funding and will prioritise thermal efficiency, with the aim of all housing achieving an EPC rating of ‘C’ at a minimum. (3/11)
TRANSPORT: Transport is the second largest emitter of carbon emissions in our city. We will continue to improve air quality and reduce carbon emissions by delivering more infrastructure for active travel and investing in sustainable transport. (4/11)
This will all be delivered through the draft Birmingham Transport Plan: https://t.co/K9CFRW3TXu<https://t.co/TPgVooU3v2> (5/11)

2/ Here are some additional images of #BullhornLady that we’ve pulled from various videos taken during the Jan. 6 insurrection:
3/ This video from outside the Capitol looks to be taken before she acquired the bullhorn. At around 1:50 in the clip, you can see her spryly climb up and into a recently shattered window.

4/ It’s possible that this early entry into the building is where she got the lay of the land that she would later use when shouting instructions to those inside the building.
5/ In this short clip, you can see a woman that appears to be #BullhornLady approaching the shattered window on the left and being handed the bullhorn:
£350m Covid19 award goes to company run by Impellam, where former Tory treasurer has ‘significant interest’. THREAD:
Recruitment firm Medacs Healthcare won the 17 Dec contract to “support medical and clinical services in laboratories” & assist “national testing programme in response to Covid-19”. It’s the 3rd largest Covid-related single award seen by @allthecitizens https://t.co/WjCQXuhTfA
Medacs Healthcare is part of the Medacs Global Group, owned by parent company ‘Impellam Group’. Impellam’s main shareholder & Chairman is Conservative donor Michael Ashcroft. He’s donated £176,104 to the Tories since the pandemic began and £851,029 since 2001.
Lord Ashcroft is listed as having ‘significant influence’ over Impellam. In addition, 56% is owned by the Lombard Trust. In 2010, Ashcroft transferred the 26m shares he held in Impellam to the Lombard Trust; the beneficiaries are his children. https://t.co/Z8gcdRpwKz
Medacs Healthcare is majority owned by Medacs Global Group, which is majority owned by Impellam Group. Medacs Healthcare has also won other Covid contracts: £357,830 on 2 smaller awards to supply temporary health personnel and also was part of two large group contracts.

A loooong thread with maps (and no memes☹️).
(1) The 2SG subject marker on the verb.
GREEN: -d
YELLOW -t (possibly a development from -d)
ReRED: -ḍ / -ṭ
There is no regular phonetic correspondence of -d to -ḍ.
(2) In most varieties *β became (or remained?) /b/ in pre-consonantal position (GREEN). In a number of varieties, this didn’t happen (RED).
(3) The Imperative M:PL suffix is -at in western Morocco AND in Awjila (Libya) (RED). It is -ət / -ăt elsewhere (GREEN). The yellow part has different suffixes.
(4) The pharyngealized (“emphatic”) non-geminated alveolar is [dˁ] (or [ðˁ]) in most of Amazigh (GREEN), but in a scattered number of varieties, it is [tˁ] (RED).
