I was having a conversation with a friend the other day about why it was so important for Democrats to win the House in November. He has become so disillusioned with both parties that he could not see the bigger picture. He doesn’t follow politics closely. My reply? #WhyVoteBlue

Like many people my friend is not a political wonk. He is disgusted by what Trump is doing to this country. But he also sees Trump as a symptom of a much larger problem within our political system. He is not convinced that there is anyone in either party that will bring change

Overheard somebody complain about the $15 minimum wage by saying that it'll spoil kids since most of them work "easy" jobs like delivering pizza.

But when was the last time you had a kid deliver your pizza?

Or your uber eats/skip the dishes.

Predominately, these workers are older people who are supporting their family - more often than not coming from an immigrant background.

It's ignorant to think that fields like this are dominated by well off kids.

It takes an incredible amount of privilege for people to assume that these jobs are a momentary right of passage.

Both my parents, university educated, worked minimum wage jobs when we first came to Canada. They worked hard so I could be where I am today.

These are honorable jobs and, once again, I wouldn't be here if my mom didn't work double shifts cleaning. Or if my dad didn't work as a cashier and at a meat packing plant.

It was backbreaking work and a $15 minimum wage would have made life more bearable for them.

My dad passed away after working an extra overnight shift at home depot.

I was asleep and woke up to my sister telling me something was wrong. He had an heart attack.

I have a feeling that a more bearable work schedule would have prevented him from dying.

Coders, write short methods! It helps with
* readability
* reusability
* and getting work done.

Readability

When you have many small methods and you name them well, your code reads like a paragraph. A well named method describes what the method will do. It's easier to read a series of phrases written in your own language than a series of math equations.

Reusability

A small method only does one thing. If a method does two things, you can only use it when both things should happen. If on only want one of the two things, you can't use that method. Methods should be Lego bricks not completed models.

Doing Work

Imagine you need to fix something in a long method. You need to understand the whole method before you change it. If you method is composed of many smaller methods, you can quickly read their names, then go to the relevant method and quickly understand it.

The computer does not care how long or short your methods are. Humans reading your code will thank you for using short methods with expressive names.

“Will we ever be able to defeat death?”

A question for which many people desire to find an answer beyond the usual ‘No’.

Let’s try and attempt this using concepts such as biological immortality, senescence, entropy and natural selection.

An explanation for death is that it is due to entropy (things wear out over time) and natural selection (we die so that future humans can live). But people and animals also die due to predators, homicide, disease and lack of food. What if we can overturn some of these factors?

1/ One of the hidden details in this article on Microsoft testing process is culture and politics. Over a decade ago when a bigger company bought my startup, they had to go through a similar culture/politics

2/ My company was lean/agile, with daily builds that went through a full automated unit/regression test that could release daily updates to customers. Their company was Microsofty waterfall development with a long period of manual testing as part of the release cycle.

3/ Culture change becomes political as people defend their jobs. The workers skilled at manual testing may lose their jobs in a shift to purely automated tests, as they may not have the skills necessary to build automated tests.

4/ It wasn't simply testing. Their update packages were inherently brittle, built in a way that was likely to fail. They were unwilling to make the architectural changes necessary to avoid the brittleness.

5/ They were therefore convinced a long period of manual testing was needed and it took years to move them off that principle.

The thing about the Rockstar/100-hour work week thing is that the drama was 100% driven by certain people in games media to score ideological points, and that, even after Houser came out to clarify his statement, folks refused to believe him, because it didn't fit the narrative.

Since Rockstar compensates for OT (as confirmed by R* employees' Tweets this morning), this note from The Guardian article this morning seems pertinent. There would be no reason to underreport your hours (and every reason to overreport) if you're getting paid for those hours.

Thing is, I've no doubt that some people at Rockstar work excessive hours, some people hate it there, some people wish they weren't there. I'm sure all of that is true.

Oh, and I'll throw this in: Whether working for someone else or on companies I founded, I don't think I've ever worked a 40 hour week in my entire life. So I can also sympathize with people who just like to work, or work really hard, or throw themselves into something. I get it.

OK, so there's a physical problem with our eyes: We move them in short fast bursts called "saccades", right? very quick, synchronized movements.
The only problem is: they go all blurry and useless during this

You've got some obvious solutions you could do.
1. make the vision go black during movement. (Some VR games do this!)
2. just keep showing the last thing we saw prior to movement

both are good options with different downsides, but OH NO. this is assuming everything makes sense and is chronological and (regular) logical.
Your brain does neither of these options, really.

first, it basically puts your visual system on "pause". You're not seeing blackness or even nothing, you're just not seeing period.
then when you finish your saccade, it shows you what you now see at the new position. and then it pretends it can time travel.
