Trump's team says they need a special master so they can find the evidence they need to move for the return of his personal property. As convoluted and backwards as that is, what's worse is why they really want a special master, something made clearer today. 1/THREAD

As @MarcACaputo reported, they not only want the special master to review every page the FBI seized, but they also want the special master to give *them* access to all of it too, including an unredacted search warrant affidavit. 2/

To give a prospective defendant a peek at each and every page seized lawfully by the FBI plus the underlying search warrant affidavit -- which contains grand jury information and evidence obtained from *multiple* witnesses -- is bonkers. 3/

And it means that Trump's real strategy is not, as I and others thought, just about delay. If he gets his way on the scope of the special master review and his team's role in it, he'll be able to compromise the investigation long before it could become a prosecution.

Some of my students are shocked when they learn that The Star-Spangled Banner, the US national anthem, has racist origins, so here’s a quick history:

The poem, “Defence of Fort M'Henry,” from which Star-Spangled Banner originates, was written by Francis Scott Key after witnessing Fort McHenry's bombardment in Baltimore by the British during the War of 1812 – a war declared by the U.S., in part, to snatch Canada.

Key “was a slave-owner and, as he would demonstrate in his later career, a thoroughgoing white supremacist.”* He dedicated his life to suppressing the abolitionist movement and co-founded the American Colonization Society to deport free Black Americans to Africa.

As an attorney, he attacked notable abolitionists. In his poem, he praised the killing of formerly enslaved people who freed themselves from bondage to join the British:

“No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight or the gloom of the grave”

In this phrase, he “brags of terrorizing and killing ‘the hireling and slave,’ implying that the British soldiers were mercenaries and explicitly condemning the renegade ex-property who fought as enemies of the star-spangled banner.”*

I want to tell a story. When I was in like 3rd grade, I went with my mom while she dropped some drugs off (yes, she was). Anyways. She left me in the car. This guys comes out to “watch” me and it’s just me and him. He looks over and asks. “You don’t know what a haiku is, do you?”

I responded “yeah, it’s a traditional Japanese poem consisting of 3 lines and in the pattern of 5-7-5 syllables.” I remember I had just written one in class. He freaked out and told me I was the smartest person he has ever met. I was literally like 8.

Anyways. On that day he vowed to make sure I always made it to school. My mother was in her own world, doing and dealing drugs. When I tell you this guy drove me and picked me up so he KNEW I went everyday.. he literally did my homework with me.

He took me to all the important things in my life. He became family. The closest thing to a father figure I’ve ever had honestly. He was my best friend. He saved my life. Tonight I got a call from his sister. He died unexpectedly from a (possible) heart attack @ around 1am.

I woke up last night. At 1 am on the dot. I literally could not fall back asleep, so I laid there until 4. And then got up and went to lab. They tried reviving him from 1-4am. It’s like in some weird way my body felt that energy. I just didn’t know.

I’ve covered student debt obsessively for the past 6 years for a documentary (coming soon!). One of the most misunderstood parts of this debate is: folks with graduate degrees. Many seem to think this group is all rich (or soon to be). This is weird & incorrect.

You realize that teachers & nurses have graduate degrees, right? Do you think they’re rich? One teacher we spoke with is a 1st-generation college grad, now 150k in debt from compounding interest on his undergrad + masters degrees. The burden got so bad, he contemplated suicide.

Then there’s veterinarians. Do you know their average student debt is ~200k? Not nightmare or worse-case scenario. Average. They don’t become wealthy either. Their suicide rates are very high in part because of debt. Does anyone think veterinarians are frivolous parts of society?

Now let’s talk about the biggest bogeyman: lawyers & doctors. This may come as a shock but not all lawyers go to school to defend oil companies. Some want to be public defenders or work in civil rights. Their degrees cost hundreds of thousands, but they make a fraction of that.

A woman we spoke with grew up poor & lost her mom to cancer. So she devoted her life to working hard to become a doctor & treat patients in low-resource settings. She’s now 250k in debt, can’t afford to work on a lower salary & has to give up on her dream to serve those in need.

If anti-democracy people are elected to literally run elections, they’re logically going to use that power to undermine democracy: more red tape, harder access to the polls, and possibly forcing people to re-register to vote.

.@ZachMontellaro doesn’t get into this but on the local level, depending on rules & jurisdiction, anti-democracy local election admins could change tech used, reduce polling locations/hours, change language accessibility, refuse to certify results, enable bad actors, & more.
