Kerala Varma Pazhassi Raja, The Lion Of Kerala, who had humbled Hyder Ali, Tipu Sultan and the British in his lifetime, a truly great warrior. Also referred to as Cotiote Rajah and Pychy Rajah, one of the earliest revolutionary warriors of India, much before the 1857 Mutiny.

Born on January 3, 1753 in the lush, green, hilly ranges of Malabar, Pazhassi Raja knew the terrain like the back of his hand, and spent time, mobilizing the people there against the invaders, first the Mysore kingdom and later the British.

When one looks at Pazhassi Raja’s history of resistance, it can be broadly be divided into three phases, first one against Hyder Ali from 1773-82, then against Tipu Sultan from 1784 to 1793 and finally the British till his death in 1805.

Hyder Ali, the ruler of Mysore had invaded the Malabar much earlier in 1766, at the behest of the Rajah of Kannur, who wanted independence from the Zamorin of Kozhikode. A long campaign later, Hyder reached Kozhikode, where the Zamorin was forced to surrender, and pay taxes.

Considering he knew the hilly terrains of Wynad well, Pazhassi was at advantage as he began to harass the enemy through a series of ambushes. Soon Pazhassi’s fame spread far and wide, and he became one of the most powerful figure head of Kottayam kingdom.

उस समय राजा शिवि एक धार्मिक यज्ञ का अनुष्ठान कर रहे थे। कबूतर उड़ते-उड़ते आर्तनाद करता हुआ राजा शिवि की गोद में आ गिरा और मनुष्य की भाषा में बोला राजन! मैं आपकी शरण आया हूँ मेरी रक्षा कीजिये।

अमान्त मास होता है। यह भी कहा गया है है कि पूर्वपक्ष अर्थात् शुक्लपक्ष देवों से संबद्ध है और उत्तरार्ध कृष्णपक्ष असुरों से ,निरुक्त में शुक्ल पक्ष को पूर्वपक्ष और कृष्णपक्ष को उत्तरपक्ष (उत्तरार्ध) बताया है ।

आधुनिक पंचांग एक प्रकार से दोनों पद्धतियों का समन्वय हैं । इनमें

मास पूर्णिमान्त होते हैं अर्थात् मास का प्रारम्भ कृष्णपक्ष से होता है और समाप्ति शुक्ल पक्ष से, अतः मास की समाप्ति पूर्णिमा को होती है । परन्तु वर्ष का प्रारम्भ शुक्लपक्ष से होता है, अर्थात् चैत्र शुक्लपक्ष से वर्ष प्रारम्भ होता है और आगामी चैत्र कृष्णपक्ष की अमावस्या को वर्ष

पूरा होता है। इस प्रकार मास पूर्णिमान्त हैं और वर्ष अमान्त हैं। अतः आधुनिक पंचांग दोनों पद्धतियों का समन्वय समझना चाहिए ।

1. Islam first arrived in India when the Umayyad Arab general Muhammad ibn Qasim conquered Sindh, the Umayyads of Damascus were notorious Arab supremacists and even Sindhis who adopted Islam were required to pay jizya because they were not Arabs.

2. In Sindh, both Sindhi Hindus and Sindhi Muslims (because they were non Arab Muslims) were required to pay jizya , but Hindus were more oppressed than Sindhi Muslims, who converted to lessen the extreme oppression Sindhi Hindus faced.

3. Under Umayyad rule Sindhi Hindus were not allowed to build temples, and had to wear clothes that was distinguishing them from Sindhi Muslims.

4. Umayyads were Arab supremacists so they made non Arab Muslims pay Jizya , but in Islamic law only non Muslims are required to pay Jizya so after the Umayyads fell Sindhi Muslims did not pay Jizya anymore. Today, 80% of Sindhis are descendants of Hindus that converted to Islam.
