How To Have An Amazing First Meeting (thread).

Learning how to hold amazing first meetings with prospective clients is the single most important "sales" skill a real financial planner can learn.

Here's what I've noticed is important.

Start with getting your head straight.

All the tips and tricks in the world are just hacks without the right mindset.

There are 3 shifts to make:

Mindset 1:

Desperate ---> Confident

No one wants to work with a desperate advisor. The purpose of a great first meeting is for the prospect AND YOU to decide if it's a good fit.

Believe that and it will change the way you think, feel, and act.

Mindset 2:

Salesperson ---> Doctor

I love sales...but the purpose of the first meeting is NOT SALES. It's understanding. You CANNOT write a prescription before you diagnose.

Mindset 3:

Numbers ---> Feelings

You might think you're in the spreadsheet and calculator business, and maybe you are...but you're also in the feelings business.

People need to be heard in the first meeting. Make room for that. Plan on it. Create it.

1/ Been thinking a lot about the interview process lately (@MorningBrew is hiring). I’ve helped not only grow the company over the last 18 months, but specifically the Rev Org from 3 to 30. Here are a few things from my experience that can hopefully help others 🧵👇 (1/18)

2/ Don’t apply just to apply. Know what job you’re looking at, and what that role actually does at the co. This can be done easily by researching the company. This will save you stress and time so you don’t apply to a role you are not actually interested in or qualified for.

3/ Read the JD carefully and thoroughly. Yes, there are some bad and vague JDs out there, but a lot are well-crafted and specific. Speak to the qualifications and responsibilities specifically.

4/ If there's real estate to write, use it. If there are questions, answer them. If there’s an opportunity for a cover letter, submit one. But, do not waste the opportunity with generic answers or a form letter. Extra space on an application is an opportunity to do a few things:

- Show you care and feel this is more than a “job” - paint a picture and tell a story.
- Prove your writing skills and communication ability - great communicators are essentially in just about any role...there’s an opportunity to stand out here from the start.

1. 🚀 Community. Compile a list of all your community contributions, open source work, conferences and meetups you've attended or organised, and make sure you sing these out during the interview. Capitalise on your passion for the community.

2. 🎉 Simplicity. Take a look at their competitors, analyse how Digital Ocean is different. During the interview, topics will come up talking about caring about the customer to make things stupid simple. Participate by mentioning how Digital Ocean is doing this everyday

3. 🪜 Transparent environment. Understand what this means, and think about the benefits of having such a core value. Go ahead to look at your career and see how changing to such a model will be beneficial. Be able to express why this model would make you a better engineer.
