Sofya Kovalevskaya was born #OTD in 1850. She was the first woman to earn a doctorate in mathematics in modern Europe, be appointed to a university chair, and join the editorial board of a scientific journal. She also won the Prix Bordin from the French Academy of Science.

 Sofya, who also went by Sonya, was born in Moscow. Her father was a nobleman who took the family from the city to a country estate.

She has quite an origin story: The family ran out of wallpaper, so they papered her room with calculus notes from her father’s time at university.
"These sheets, spotted over with strange incomprehensible formulae, soon attracted my attention. I passed whole hours before that mysterious wall, trying to decipher even a single phrase, and to discover the order in which the sheets ought to follow each other."
As a child she was given a physics book by a family friend. It required trigonometry, which she figured out on her own. The family friend, amazed by her ability, convinced Sofya’s father to arrange a private tutor.
She excelled at mathematics, but women were barred from Russian universities at the time. So she entered into a marriage of convenience with a young geology student and went with him to Heidelberg. She couldn’t enroll there either, but at least she could attend lectures.
After wowing the professors for a few years, Sofia went to Berlin to study with Weierstrass. You remember Weierstrass:

Weierstrass wasn’t receptive, so he gave Kovalevskaya extremely difficult problems designed to discourage her. Sofya Vasilyevna Kovalevskaya solved his problems and Weierstrass became her ardent supporter.
He worked with Kovalevskaya for the next four years, charging her no tuition, and then arranged for her to apply for her doctorate from the University of Göttingen. She presented papers on partial differential equations, elliptic integrals, and the rings of Saturn.
Sofya was awarded her doctorate with honors in 1874, making her the first woman to earn a Ph.D. (as we now think of it) in math. However, finding a job was another matter.
For six years, from 1874 to 1880, Kovalevskaya tried to be a housewife. She would later recall this time as "the soft slime of bourgeois existence.” She and her husband had a daughter, Fufa, but separated in 1880. Sofia went to Paris and was elected to the Mathematical Society.
(Take a moment to consider the utter perfection of the phrase "the soft slime of bourgeois existence.”)
On Weierstrass’s recommendation the mathematician Gösta Mittag-Leffler helped Kovalevskaya find a position in Sweden. She became a lecture at the University of Stockholm in 1883. Some prominent Swedes objected to a female professor, but the University promoted her.
During that period Kovaleskaya joined the editorial board of Acta Mathematica. She was the first woman to hold such a position. There she is, listed in the Redaction, in an issue from 1885.

In 1886, Kovalevskaya entered the Prix Bordin contest sponsored by the French Academy of Science, for the best paper on the subject of the rotation of a solid body around a fixed point.
Like all entries, her paper "Sur le probleme de la rotation d'un corps solide autour d'un point fixé” was submitted anonymously. Contestants signed their papers with a quote. Her quote was “Say what you know, do what you must, come what may."
The judges overwhelmingly favored her treatment, which extended previous results on the rotation of symmetric objects to the case where an object’s center of mass is no longer on its axis. They were so impressed that they increased the amount of the prize by a full 2,000 francs.
Imagine entering a contest like this and the judges think your solution is so good that not only do you win but they have to increase the prize money.
When the judges announced the winner, they said that Kovalevskaya’s work "allows him to give a complete solution in the most precise and elegant form.”

Remember, the entries were anonymous. The judges assumed the author was a *him*.
Kovalevskaya continued to work on the subject, winning another prize from the Swedish Academy of Sciences in 1889. In June of that year she was promoted to chair of her department.
The great Russian mathematician Chebyshev was so impressed by Kovalevskaya’s work that he lobbied for her election to Russia's Imperial Academy of Sciences. He insisted on it.
How do you argue with a man who has a polynomial named after him?

The Imperial Academy of Sciences, the preeminent scientific organization in the country where Kovaleskaya had been refused a spot at univerisity because she was a woman, changed their rules to allow her election.
In 1891, after returning from a trip to Italy, Kovalevskaya died from complications related to influenza and pneumonia. She was only 41.
Not surprisingly, given her experience with sexism in Tsarist in Russia, Kovalevskaya was involved in the Russian Nihilism movement. In 1890 she wrote a semi-autobiographical novel titled "Nihilist Girl."

Besides a few novels, Kovaleskaya also co-wrote a play with Anna Leffler –– the sister of her colleague Gösta Mittag-Leffler. Critics enjoyed her work but were surprised that someone could have such facility with both mathematics and literature. In response, she said:

THREAD: Meditations on marriage metaphors in Ruth

The book of Ruth is, of course, a story about a beautiful marriage. But even before the courtship and the wedding and the important genealogy at the end, we find interesting language that is strikingly reminiscent of Genesis 2:24


That important verse reads:

'Therefore a man shall leave [יַֽעֲזָב] his father and his mother and hold fast [וְדָבַ֣ק] to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.'

The verb עזב can be quite strong in force. For example, Joseph leaves behind [וַיַּעֲזֹ֤ב] his garment as he flees from Pharaoh's wife's sexual advances. Countless times, Israel is depicted abandoning the LORD, for example in Judg 2:12 [וַיַּעַזְב֞וּ], and going after other gods.

Likewise, the verb דבק is rather striking. Lot is mortified of disaster overtaking him [תִּדְבָּקַ֥נִי] as he flees from Sodom. Israel is commanded in Deut 10:20 to cling fast [תִדְבָּ֔ק] to the LORD and serve him and swear by his name.

Together they illustrate how radical God designed marriage to be. Marriage is a real severing of family relations in order to form a new, permanent bond with another human being.

Something very similar to this takes places in Ruth's life.

In 1989, two members of the group, Morten Harket and Magne Furuholmen were in Switzerland with environmentalist Frederic Hauge, when they came across a hobby-converted Fiat Panda. Stated range: 45 km. They snapped it up and imported it to Norway.

On arrival in Norway, the regs didn't accommodate the registration of electric cars so it couldn't legally be driven on the road. Since it had a propane-fuelled heater, just like a motorhome, they registered it as a motorhome.

Moreover, in contrast to petrol cars, diesel cars paid registration fees based on how far they were driven, and our heroes thought this should also apply to electric cars. So the two-seater Swiss-converted Fiat Panda was registered as a diesel motorhome in Norway.

They managed (somehow) to avoid paying the one-off registration fee in 1990, and ever since then electric cars have been exempted this now-substantial fee.

1/ The tulip is a spring-blooming flower native to the valleys of the Tien Shan Mountains in Central Asia.

It is believed to have been introduced to Europe in 1554, when an ambassador of the Holy Roman Emperor sent tulip bulbs and seeds to Vienna from the Ottoman Empire.


2/ Tulips gained in popularity as people were attracted to their rich color and ability to grow in sub-optimal conditions.

They soon became a coveted status symbol for the wealthy.

The Semper Augustus, with its colorful, flame-like streaks, was the most desired of them all.


3/ By the early 1600s, the Dutch Republic was entering a golden age.

Many financial innovations popped up during this time - the first stock exchange, for example.

But it was another financial innovation that would propel tulips into historical lore: the futures contract.

4/ As tulips grow slowly and may take several years to bloom, paper contracts were written that entitled the buyer to the future tulips.

These contracts were freely-traded.

So in addition to the physical market for tulip bulbs, a thriving paper market was established.

With no constitutional authority to do so, Congress created a separate form of government for the District of Columbia, a ten-mile square parcel of land (see, Acts of the Forty-first Congress,”

Section 34, Session III, chapters 61 and 62).
The act — passed when the country was weakened and financially depleted in the aftermath of the Civil War — was a strategic move by foreign interests (international bankers) who were intent upon gaining a stranglehold on the coffers

and neck of America.
Congress cut a deal with the international bankers (specifically Rothschilds of London) to incur a DEBT to said bankers. Because the bankers were not about to lend money to a floundering nation without serious stipulations, they devised a way to get their

foot in the door of the United States.
The Act of 1871 formed a corporation called THE UNITED STATES. The corporation, OWNED by foreign interests, moved in and shoved the original Constitution into a dustbin.

With the Act of 1871, the organic Constitution was defaced — in effect vandalized and sabotage — when the title was capitalized and the word “for” was changed to “of” in the title.

Accountancy is more likely to be mocked than celebrated (or condemned), but accountants, far more than poets, are the unacknowledged legislators of the world.

Though "bean counters" are employed by firms, they are notionally bound by a professional code of ethics every bit as serious as the Hippocratic Oath: "count things honestly." Without an accurate accounting of quantities, you can't make good decisions on quality.

Though accountancy concerns itself with counting things, it is inextricably bound up with the realm of ideas, and accounting conventions (how you account for things) are philosophical matters, not empirical ones.

It's no coincidence that #ModernMonetaryTheory owes more to accountancy than it does to economics. Economic accounts of the economy have an unfortunate tendency to proceed from first principles, creating models based on pure reason, without checking in on the actual world.

For example, neoclassical econ's "homo economicus," the rational value-maximizing actor who populated so many models; or economists' insistence on targeting inflation with interest rates; or treating national "debts" like they were household debts.

इमारत, पर्वत या अट्टालिकाओं पर ज़रूर देखा होगा। देखा है न?

ज़रा सोचिये पीपल या बरगद की बीज कैसे पहुंचे होंगे वहाँ तक? इनके बीज इतने हल्के भी नहीं होते के हवा उन्हें उड़ाके ले जा सके।

SRI BANKEY BIHARI JI, VRINDAVAN (UP)

Very famous Krishna Mandir where Bankey Bihari Ji is worshipped and looked after as a child.
Bankey means “Bent at three places”.
Thakur Ji was worshipped in Nidhivan till 1863. This mandir was constructed in 1864 by Goswamis.

Legend says that Swami Haridas used to worship Krishna in Nidhivan.
Once, his curious disciples entered the forest but they were almost blinded by bright, intense light. Upon knowing this, Swamiji himself went there and after his requests, Krishna appeared with his consort.


Krishna, then, left back this black charming murti,which we see now, before disappearing.
A curtain is drawn before the murti after every 15-30 second. It is said that if one stares long enough into the eyes of Shri Banke Bihari, the person would lose his self consciousness.


Bankey Bihari Ji sports a flute only once a year on the eve of Sharad Purnima.
Darshan of His lotus feet can be done only on Akshay Tritiya every year.
There are no loud bells here and
no early morning Darshan can be done so that child Krishna’s sleep is not disturbed.
