MY UPDATE TONIGHT: What just changed.

Executive orders and control of the agencies has done significant damage to America. That’s going to change.

Medicaid work requirements — done.

The public charge to deprive immigrants of their legal rights — done.

More judges that respect “life” but not “human lives”— that’s over.

Policies that don’t protect LGBTQ+ people equally— ripped up.

A pandemic we feel we can ignore— done.

The story that a woman can’t be elected to a national ticket— no more.

Stephen Miller’s immigration policies. Bye.

Cuts to school lunch programs and affordable housing initiatives. Gone.

Sabotage of the ACA (once we beat back the attacks in court)— See ya.

Disrespecting our civil service workforce every day. Bye bye.

Robbing the Medicare Trust Fund and social security. That stops.

Political interference with vaccine development & safety. Left the building.

Ripping up environmental regulations, nursing home regulations, consumer protections— gone.

Betsy Devos. Pack up.

Unequal justice, race baiting and Bill Barr. Find them on cable.

1600 Covid Avenue. Cleaned up. Needs a few hepa filters and a few days with windows open but gone.

Not doing our part at the WHO for moms and kids, HIV, vaccine distribution— that’s over.

Corrupt postal service and voter and census suppression— you’ve done enough.

Disregard for science. That will stop.

Bullying as an example for kids. Will end from the White House.

Racism. Structural. Personal. Public. Private. Any kind. Will be replaced with a celebration of differences.

The fight will go on but the President and VP will be fighting alongside us not against us.

All these threats to you. To us. To who we are. To our potential. And many many other threats are subsiding. Not forever, but for now.

So many things that were becoming a way of continual suppression. We must now make our way back. /end

Some time in the 7th century AD, Sanskrit writer Bāṇabhaṭṭa did a biography on his patron, emperor Harshavardhana. It was titled Harṣacarīta and is said to be the first biographical work from the subcontinent.

Besides abundant references to the Greeks (as Yavanas, derived from Ionians), the book recounts a curious incident of king Vatsapati being ambushed by soldiers emerging from "the belly of a sham elephant."

#TodayInHistory Ram Prasad Bismil,Ashfaqullah Khan and Roshan Singh are hanged in 1927, as they give up their life for the cause of freedom and inspire many a revolutionary. #LestWeForget

Shahjahanpur was a hub of revolution during the freedom struggle. Most of the revolutioaries in the North, were from this town. And among them, the most famous were two friends, whom destiny would bring together- Ram Prasad Bismil and Ashfaqullah Khan.

Ashfaqullah Khan was born at the turn of the 20th century on October 22, while Bismil was born 3 years earlier on June 11, in the same town. Both of them were excellent writers in Urdu and Hindi.

Both of them would come together under the Hindustan Republican Association, not to mention the fact that Ashfaq was an admirer of Bismil’s poetry, and became close friends with him on that account.

And both these men were hanged on the same date, December 19, 1927 for their involvement in the Kakori event. Two men from different religions, different backgrounds, yet destiny would bring them together.

We will likely never be able to establish with certainty the identity of the two Black men painted by Rembrandt. There are no documents found, linking the painting to individuals. But we can make a reasoned guess. #BlackHistoryMonth #day20 #rembrandt #identification

First there is the problem of the date. The inventory with a reference to 'two Moors in one painting' was drawn up in 1656 in what is now the @Rembrandthuis; however, the painting that hangs in the @Mauritshuis bears not only Rembrandt’s signature but also the year 1661.

Was the painting made in 1656 while Rembrandt was still living and working in Jodenbreestraat, and not signed and sold until 1661, when he had moved to the Jordaan district? The 1656 estate inventory suggests this.

On the other hand, it is of course possible that Rembrandt painted several pictures featuring two black men. Nevertheless, supposing that it is one and the same
painting, then we can assume that the two men
were in the studio in Jodenbreestraat to be portrayed in or before 1656.

Of course there still are dozens of candidates, since there was a small Black community in the area. However, it is striking, and exceptional, that two men are portrayed instead of one, as was customary in this genre.

A thread on HN about bad code in legacy projects both makes me think how little we've learned as a discipline over the years and, honestly, how little credit we give ourselves for some pretty major

Fun going down this list and thinking: "Hmm, plausible at a well-run modern software shop", "Hmm, possible, but requires implausible tradeoffs", "Literally disallowed by languages", and "If you were to attempt doing that our test suite wouldn't let you merge."

I think we as an industry celebrate (not quite the right word) failure too much and don't celebrate success nearly enough. There is no DailyWTF for competent execution, word of which generally stays pretty local to the source while incompetence passes into legend.

Alrighty let me try to thread the needle on being the change I want to see in the world while not giving away anything that will get me in trouble:

Ruby has wonderful developer ergonomics. Typed languages are easier for machines to guarantee the correctness of. We built a type checker for Ruby (and I believe it is slated for OSS release sometime).
