okay but seriously though i've had to swallow down a lot of objections to transphobic comments from people who are friends! with other trans people! but apparently not good enough friends to put in effort not to do like 101 fuckups

real fucking hard to carve out any space in gamedev at all as it is let alone having to swallow down and smile politely to shit basic research would point out is Not Okay
is it an NT thing or what bc when i make friends with someone whose identity I don't already understand i go and research to try and ensure i don't accidentally cause them pain with basic fucking mistakes that are incredibly dehumanizing
not even touching on how fucking common it is to see established people deciding that today they're going to shit on a shitpost by a marginalized junior being excited about something
i was really excited when i first started being able to establish myself as a dev and now im just filled with dread all of the time because frankly a lot of devs are fucking MEAN and the leftist presentation crumbles on the slightest fuckin provocation
cool you want a minimum wage, that's nice, have you considered not bullying neurodiverse people today with disaffected Jokes and then digging your heels in when told you're being a fucking asshole??
have you considered getting Any understanding of power dynamics and how social media platforms and harassment work???
if i wanted my industry to improve and be more diverse i would simply do the fucking work to not be an active hazard to the people i supposedly want to work with
so many people i assumed were cool because of the people following them crack and reveal themselves to be nasty as fuck the second they find a target they feel they can present themselves as Righteous in being awful about and im tired of it. please fix your shit.

This response to my tweet is a common objection to targeted advertising.

@KevinCoates correct me if I'm wrong, but basic point seems to be that banning targeted ads will lower platform profits, but will mostly be beneficial for consumers.

Some counterpoints 👇

1) This assumes that consumers prefer contextual ads to targeted ones.

This does not seem self-evident to me

Research also finds that firms choose between ad. targeting vs. obtrusiveness 👇

If true, the right question is not whether consumers prefer contextual ads to targeted ones. But whether they prefer *more* contextual ads vs *fewer* targeted

2) True, many inframarginal platforms might simply shift to contextual ads.

But some might already be almost indifferent between direct & indirect monetization.

Hard to imagine that *none* of them will respond to reduced ad revenue with actual fees.

3) Policy debate seems to be moving from:

"Consumers are insufficiently informed to decide how they share their data."

To

"No one in their right mind would agree to highly targeted ads (e.g., those that mix data from multiple sources)."

IMO the latter statement is incorrect.
