With #ResignKenney continuing to trend, I want to talk a bit about what realistic options Albertans have for holding this govt accountable.

Let's be clear about one thing - there is no way Kenney will choose to resign. There are, however, other ways to take down a leader [1/8]

that has lost the moral authority to govern.

The typical process is to simply vote their party out in the next election. Unfortunately, the next #abvote is not until spring 2023, so w/ their legislative majority, we are likely stuck with the UCP for another 2 full years [2/8]
BUT WAIT!

That doesn't mean it isn't possible to force an election sooner or remove Kenney as Premier! Let's talk about how this could work.

There are 2 feasible scenarios, both of which involve UCP MLA's breaking ranks with their party.

To force an early election, we [3/8]
would need 20 or more sitting UCP MLA's to leave the UCP Caucus, to either sit as independents or join another party, and then vote no on the next confidence motion in the legislature.

However, if the goal is just to remove Kenney as leader, this could be accomplished by [4/8]
a caucus revolt, with enough MLA's threatening to quit if he doesn't resign.

The last time AB MLA's quit a majority governing caucus was in 2014, when Len Webber and Donna Kennedy-Glans left Alison Redford's PC Caucus.

Although only 2 quit, upwards of 10 threatened to & [5/8]
she was forced to resign. This did not trigger an election, but it was the beginning of the end for the PCAA.

To make either scenario happen, we need to shift our focus from Kenney to his MLA's, & apply sustained, overwhelming pressure to these individuals.

We need to [6/8]
make it clear to our MLA's that they are either with Albertans or with Kenney & they need to choose.

So email your MLA, call or drop by their office, send them letters, tag them in your social media posts, tweets & retweets, participate safely & responsibly in public [7/8]
protests, and encourage your friends, family & neighbours to join you.

It doesn't so much matter how you make your voice heard, so long as you do. If you don't feel like you're getting through, try something else.

Good luck and remember - we are all in this together. [8/8]

ETA: Thank you @MLA_Karen for correcting misinformation in this thread. She left the governing ANDP Caucus in 2017 and Robyn Luft left in 2018.

I apologize for not double checking my legislative memory before posting and hope it doesn't distract from the purpose of this thread.

Should we go into the details of these 125 years?

SA is built on the exploitation of labour. That labour has functioned on alcohol unfortunately. Very few people consume liquor purely for enjoyment unfortunately. When SAB opened its doors 1895 workers were paid in alcohol- the dop/tot system. 2 years into SAB's establishment

The Prohibition Act is introduced. This means black people are barred from buying your wines, beer etc. So SAB's products are exclusively for white people. But during this period beer brewing by Black women is the norm. Ayinxilisi ncam ke this type of beer. Apparently it had some

Nutritious elements to it. Now some of the context around drinking culture during this time is migrant labour to the mines, further land dispossession, the Anglo-Boer Wars, Rhodes corruption (our first state capture commission if you will) which leads to his resignation.

This context plays a role in how our cities and small towns are constructed, how they lead to the confinement and surveillance yabantu. Traditional beer brewing is identified as a threat because buy now mining bosses have identified that there's money to be made here.
This is a GREAT argument to pull up when talking to people about minimum wage. Some others nested below

A large number of new jobs being created are minimum to low wage, so looking for a new job generally won’t increase pay.

Raising minimum wage helps things not directly related.

Helps Infant mortality? Yup.

Lowers Suicide? Yup.

Reduce smoking rates? You bet.

It also boosts the local economy! Minimum to low wage earners spend more % of their money, so an increase means more is spent, often in community!

Low paying jobs are often in sectors which would gain from this. More people spending money in your shop makes your business more money! Now you have more profits and increased labor costs are covered.
