I suspect Repubs are only pantomiming because they know it won’t work & Biden will be sworn in

Like kids playing with the stove, eyeballing Mom the whole time, knowing she’ll stop them

If it worked, they’d have to be responsible for the results of their choices. Can’t have that

Republicans have spent decades successfully blaming Democrats for the bad results of their policies & putting forward none of their own beyond tax cuts.

If they pulled off a coup they would have to stand by it & every fruit of that poisoned tree.

They literally don’t know how.
A coup ends the whole idea of an opposing party. It leaves Republicans in full control

Even with their full time propaganda network, they can’t pretend jettisoning the whole-ass Constitution doesn’t mean they’re in charge.

They haven’t had to stand by a choice since Eisenhower
If there was any chance at all of the Sedition Caucus pulling this coup off, they would never do it.

Their grift, their prestige, their safety, their rhetoric all depend on a functioning system not stomped into chaos by civil war against the majority they would disenfranchise.
Any given Republican would rather eat their own face on live TV than make a public decision & be held responsible for its consequences

That’s why McConnell is their savior. He blocks everything so they never even have to vote, their names are attached to no actual choices, ever.
While it looks like 140 Reps & 12 Angry Republicans in the Senate are making a choice now, they’re really not.

They know Mom is coming to turn off the stove before they get hurt & sternly tell them they must be more careful in the future

This is the safest rebellion imaginable.
These Republican traitors—and they are—get to play out their little Mr. Smith Goes to the Confederacy fantasy, reap donations & loyalty from the base they’ve radicalized.

Then the bell will ring & all the children will stop their games & go home while teacher cleans up the mess.
There is absolutely no risk for Cruz, Hawley, anyone

They own most of the media & are supported by a sea of dark money & motives. Trump showed them they don’t have to care

& they never have to own drowning this country in blood or the actual disaster of their daydream theocracy
So I’m not surprised Republicans are willing to openly commit sedition. I’m surprised more of them don’t.

Even the “liberal” media is reluctant to go hard on them & their voters never will. This is a perfect performance piece for them.

It means nothing & costs us everything.
But I maintain that if there was a chance in hell of this working, they would make a lot of noise & then say the system tied their hands & let a previously automatic system proceed.

They don’t want to catch the car. They can’t fucking drive. Barking is so much more fun.
Of course the damage they cause is enormous & will be with us for a long time.

Us, not them.

They will keep tending their white supremacist garden & harming everyone outside their bubble. That’s following your bliss, for a Republican.

This is partly what makes it impossible to have a constructive conversation nowadays. The stubborn refusal to accept that opposition to Trumpism and GOP nationalism is about more than simply holding different beliefs about things in and of itself. 👇

It's fine for people to hold different beliefs. But that doesn't mean all beliefs deserve equal treatment or tolerance and it doesn't mean intolerance of some beliefs makes a person intolerant of every belief which they don't share.

So if I said I don't think Trumpism deserves to be tolerated because it's just a fresh 21st century coat of cheap paint on a failed, dangerous 20th century ideology (fascism) that doesn't mean I'm intolerant of all beliefs with which I disagree. You'd think this would be obvious.

Another important facet. People who support fascist movements tend to give what they think are valid reasons for supporting them. That doesn't mean anyone is obliged to tolerate fascism or accept their proffered excuse.

Say you joined a neighborhood group that sets up community gardens and does roadside beautification projects. All good, right? Say one day you're having a meeting and you notice the President and exec board of this group are saying some bizarre things about certain neighbors.
