Tanking first step in that direction made a small video on how to do data Analysis in excel.

for positional straddle - i prefer monthly expiry [because of higher premium and comfortable to manage monthly options]
for positional strangle/IC - i prefer weekly expiry [as it is easy to get 15 points every week then getting 60 points in whole month]

Most risky position of option selling is ovenight straddle/strangle as we carry risk of black swan event.
Lets try to find the solution can we mitigate or reduce this risk?

Will try to explain with 24th Feb 22 gap down [3.2%] how the strategy wise impact looks like. assumed cap 25L

1⃣ say we deploy full capital i.e. for 1.6L 1 lot we trade. attached pic shows impact on various strategies. in straddle we lost highest 8.5% of cap,

in strangle lost in range of 2.4 - 2% .
in iron-fly loss of 2% &
iron condor [with 200 points hedge] 0.5%

Now, these numbers can be on much higher side if gap is bigger or say circuit. This assumes we exit at open - if we stay till close numbers are worst.

2⃣ now lets reduce position size take 1 lot per 2 Lac or 2.5 La... bot files attached

by doing this we reduce impact of naked position below 6% for straddle & below 1.5% for strangles
same time, ironfly & iron condor impact down to 1.15% & 0.3% respectively

3⃣ now lets see impact if we trade 1 lot every 5 lacs.
impact of strangles and iron condors is with in limit on overall capital [< 0.75%]

idea is to chose your battle wisely.

to sum-up:
1⃣ Prefer hedged strategies [ironfly/IC (with closer hedges)] as compared to naked

Option Buying Setup!

Basic rule for day trading in option buying for beginners.
1) Stick to monthly atm options.
2) Suppose u have a capital of Rs 5 lacs. Your max risk appetite is 1% which is 5k. Assume u look at BNF chart and find a buy setup at 35000 ...

with a stop of 34900 ( 100 point difference). This essentially means that the 35000 atm options will have a stop of Rs 200 ( delta 0.5) assuming all other things are equal. So the number of lots U should typically deal with based on 1% Risk on 5 lacs capital ...

is 5000 / 200, which is 25 , ie 1 lot. If your risk appetite is 2%, then u are allowed to take 50, ie 2 lots. Hence if option price is say, Rs 400, ur stop will be 200 and u have to deal with one lot which means your deployment is 25 x 400 = Rs 10,000....

On the contrary if you deploy the full amount, 500000/(25x400) = 1250 , 50 lots, u r bound to lose the capital at the shortest possible time.
3) This might appear ridiculous, but this is the only way to go steady with control over risk.

Option stop difference is Rs 50 and not Rs 200 as mentioned. Simple calculation overlooked. Accordingly number of lots will increase . However concept remains unchanged.

Ever wondered y gamma is the enemy of straddle / strangle sellers and what it means?

Presume readers are aware of option Greeks meaning...

To understand , first ...

Relationship between delta, gamma, theta and option premium.
....

Theta + (int Rate x Underlying price x Delta) + ( 0.5 x variance of underlying x Underlying price x Underlying Price x Gamma ) = Int rate x Option premium.

Strangle and straddles are delta neutral setup;For a delta neutral setup, the second term becomes zero; Hence,

= Int rate x option premium

Straddle and strangles have typically zero delta at initiation; they also have positive theta, meaning they gain over time assuming other components of option r constant ..

In a delta neutral portfolio, if theta is largely +ve , Gamma will be -ve by a large extent to satisfy the above relation mathematically, which means that as expiry nears the strangles and straddles will have large -ve gamma; This is wat u see traders telling gamma effect.

HOW TO ADJUST A SHORT STRANGLE?

Gone are those days where a short strangle used to expire worthless without any adjustments.

Adjustments are a must when your initial view goes wrong which it will.

Listing down all the ways to adjust a short strangle WITH EXAMPLES below.

1: Rolling up/down:

If you've sold a short strangle and one side premium spikes, you can book the profitable side and roll it up to match the premium of the other side.

eg: If you've sold a 60rs call and a 60rs put. If the 60rs call goes to 100. Then book profits in put and sell a 100 pt put.

This is the most basic way of adjustment.

2: Rolling the losing side:

It's very similar to the above adjustment however, we will consider shifting the losing side instead of profitable side.

eg: If you've sold 50pt call and 50pt put. If the 50pt put spikes up and goes to 120. Sometimes, I wouldn't want to sell a 120 pt call.

Hence, I simply book loss in the put and sell a new put worth 50pts which is farther away from the previous put.
