As usual, @C_Stroop is right that we need to get ready to roll up our sleeves. This doesn't end on inauguration day. Christian Nationalism needs to be in the spotlight it must be exposed to be fought. Small town Christo-fascism is on the rise, and my hometown is an example. 1/

 My hometown is Alamogordo, New Mexico. It's a military town. Holloman Air Force base is nearby, and so is the Army's White Sands Missile Range. It's also a hotbed of White Evangelical Christian Nationalism. 2/
Currently, the most notorious Christian Nationalist from Alamogordo that I can think of is Couy Griffin (no relation to me). He's a former pastor, turned County Commissioner, and founder of the group "Cowboys for Trump." I've talked about him before. 3/

Couy Griffin and his Cowboys for Trump attended the the Coup Klux Klan in D.C. I'm not surprised. They went prepared for extremism. Here's a quick video of them outside the kitschy "Running Indian" trading post just outside Alamogordo. 4/
Notice what they say. "Give me liberty or give me death" and "We've god God on our side, and we've got the Truth on our side." Probably every Ex-evangelical I know has heard those words in church. 5/
Shortly before the riots started, Couy, forever the preacher, addressed some of the crowd in D.C. with a megaphone and asked them to pray with him. 6/
Couy is now in hot water, which is nothing new. After the riots he said: "We could have a second amendment rally on the same steps we had that rally yesterday and if we do it’s going to be a sad day because there’s going to be blood running out of that building" 7/
He went on to say: "And at the end of the day, you mark my word, we will plant our flag on the desk of Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer and Donald J. Trump if it boils down to it." Note that last name. Trump's a means to an end for Evangelicals. 8/

When asked if it was a threat, he said it was. Just like before when said that the only good Democrat was a Democrat, he's under fire and facing calls for his resignation, but I doubt much will come of it. 9/
As I mentioned, Couy is a former pastor. He preached at the New Heart Cowboy Church in Alamogordo. I wondered what the new pastor of the church, Vic Williford, was preaching about or if he was any better, so I forced myself to watch his first post-coup attempt sermon. 10/
It was everything I expected, hometown Christian Authoritarianism hasn't changed. Here's Pastor Williford calmly stating that Biden is a "Demonic Democrat" during his sermon. The dehumanization of Dems is not new, and particularly troubling in days of murderous intentions. 11/
He compares the United States as Sodom and Gomorrah and says that he thinks it must be destroyed by God unless we are brought to our knees by a faithful remnant. How are we supposed to find "healing" and "unification" with the Religious Right that thinks we must be destroyed? 12/
Pastor Williford also references popular conspiracy theories about pedophilia rings. Also, no surprise there. 13/

As you can see, my little hometown is deep into Christian Nationalism, and Alamogordo isn't that unique in that aspect. Towns and churches across the U.S. are in the thrall of Christian Nationalism. 15/
What bothers me specifically about my little town is it's proximity to the military men and women. Those who are stationed near Alamogordo are indoctrinated by the Evangelical churches and take that religion with them back to base, and out to wherever they are stationed next 16/
Ashli Babbitt was a veteran that was radicalized. She very well could have been radicalized in a town or church like the one I grew up in. One of my youth pastors was an A-10 pilot and civil war fanatic (who was a bit sympathetic to the South). 17/
Much like @Artists_Ali, I don't understand why the connection that Evangelicals to the military, especially in the Air Force, is so surprising to people. 18/

I don't believe that the Military has been completely compromised, but I do believe there are many who serve who are compromised, and that bothers me. 19/
As we progress through 2021, I hope that mainstream sources like @ABC @CNN @MSNBC @NBCNews and more will take the threat of homegrown Christian Authoritarianism more seriously. It needs to be exposed to be addressed. 20/

👁‍🗨 Witnessing...they conclude that witnesses have to be "physically present" and you cannot witness somebody by video link. Probably correct as a matter of case law. It's a shame they aren't more forceful in their urge for change here...

The point in witnessing has always been evidential. So that if one person claims they didn't actually sign a document, you have somebody you can call upon to attest evidence that they did or did not. Also adds some formality to the process to make people think

When you're using e-signature, people's email addresses are being put into a system. You also have IP addresses, geolocations, timestamps all recorded when people actually go on to sign the document. Doesn't this add quite a lot of evidential value?

Physical presence would help avoid a scenario where somebody gains access to somebody else's email account, signs a document and then gets somebody to witness. If that witness were virtual, they wouldn't see the mischief that has occurred...is this not quite a remote risk though?

BREAKING – Authorities destroying Mullivaikkal memorial at Jaffna University

A monument paying tribute to the tens of thousands of Tamils massacred by the Sri Lankan state at the University of Jaffna is currently being bulldozed by authorities.


Heavy machinery has been pictured inside the campus toppling the monument.

Students have gathered at the gates of university campus but fear entering amidst reports that Sri Lankan soldiers may also be present.


Sri Lankan police officers have been pictured arriving at the scene just moments ago, as the tense situation continues.

The monument was first unveiled in 2019, on the 10 year anniversary of the Mullivaikkal massacres.

The massacres saw tens of thousands of Tamils killed by the Sri Lankan state in 2009.


As students gathered outside the gates, they expressed concerns about other memorials inside the campus, including the Pongu Thamil commemoration board and a central monument commemorating lives lost in the Tamil liberation

On this day in history three years ago, ICE detained immigrant rights leader #RaviRagbir, and police arrested community members protesting this injustice. A reminder that when people stand up for immigrant rights, they are not treated with kid gloves. 1/

Ravi Ragbir, Jean Montrevil, and @NewSanctuaryNYC stood up against cruel and inhumane deportation policies. For that, they were surveilled, arrested, detained, and transferred to an immigration prison in FL in January 2018. 2/

Jean, co-founder of @NewSanctuaryNYC and congregant of @judsonchurchnyc was deported to Haiti on Jan.16, 2018, after coming to the U.S. as lawful permanent resident more than 30 years ago. ICE's actions separated him from his four U.S. citizen children. 3/

ICE continues to pursue Ravi's deportation (as recently as this Friday the government filed papers to try to get rid of the federal lawsuit staying Ravi's deportation). Ravi continues to fight for his freedom and stand up for immigrant rights. 4/

Ravi and Jean were not the only ones targeted for speaking out. 18 community members, including NYC elected leaders @JumaaneWilliams and @ydanis, were arrested during the protest against ICE's actions that occurred 3 years ago today. 5/

EFCC Arrests Two Brothers, Six Other Suspected Internet Fraudsters in Osogbo
…4 Internet Fraudsters Convicted In Lagos


The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Ibadan zonal office, on Thursday, January 28, 2021, arrested eight men suspected to be internet fraudsters in Osogbo, Osun State.

The suspects Akinrinmade Adepoju Sunday and his brother Akinrinmade Adeniyi were arrested in their room and parlor apartment, others are Dennis Oluwamuyiwa, Oni Oluwaseyi, Adeyemo Adeyinka, Aborisade Abayomi, Goodluck Olatayo, and Gbolahan Sodiq.

They were arrested at their hideout in Ayegbami area of the ancient town by operatives, working on actionable intelligence on their alleged criminal activities.

Items recovered from the suspects include two cars, laptops and mobile phones.

They will be charged to court as soon as investigations are concluded.

In a related development, the Lagos Zonal office of the Commission has secured the conviction of four internet fraudsters.

The story is of a time when ideally the eldest son of the king becomes the heir to the throne. Hence the sinhasan of the Raja belonged to Dhruva.This is why Suruchi who was the 2nd wife nourished poison in her heart for Dhruva as she knew her son will never get the throne.


One day when Dhruva was just 5 years old he went on to sit on his father's lap. Suruchi, the jealous queen, got enraged and shoved him away from Raja as she never wanted Raja to shower Dhruva with his fatherly affection.


Dhruva protested questioning his step mother "why can't i sit on my own father's lap?" A furious Suruchi berated him saying "only God can allow him that privilege. Go ask him"

In 1937, a trucker got frustrated waiting for his cargo to be unloaded. He later sold his company for $1.1 billion.

Here’s the story of how Malcom McLean made a billion dollars and which startup could be following in his footsteps. (Inspired by our episode with @laurabehrenswu)


In the early 1950s, the shipping industry was a dying business.

New York’s docks were handling half as much domestic cargo in the early 1950s as they had been in the depressed 1930s.

In thirty years, no one had invested significant money in coastal shipping.

Why?

As McLean found out, loading ships was difficult and slow.

A truck or train would deliver items to the port. Each item was unloaded separately, recorded, and carried to storage.

When a ship was ready, each item was taken from storage, counted again, and hauled on-board.


The cost of this labor was significant. As one expert at the time explained:

“A four-thousand-mile voyage for a shipment might consume 50 percent of its costs in covering just the two ten-mile movements through two ports.”


Yet, despite the industry’s issues, it felt little pressure to change.

Foreigners were barred from operating domestically. Cartels ran international routes. And gov. subsidies eased the pain of labor costs.

Reshaping the industry needed an outsider.
