In 2004, I left a highly authoritarian group which at that time, C. Peter Wagner considered a leadership paradigm for the New Apostolic Reformation. I left after I found out about the group's secretive past and questioned its true motives, which was to take over the world. 1/

 They renamed themselves Every Nation around the time I left. They were previously known as Morning Star International. They were directly descended from a notorious Religious Right campus "cult" of the 70s and 80s, Maranatha Campus Ministries. 2/
Maranatha Campus Ministries was among what Sara Diamond once called the "shock troops of the Religious Right." And underneath the rebranding and leadership shuffles in the wake of MCM's breakup in 1990, the new group arising from its ashes also aspired to take over the world. 3/
I left bc 1. I was terrified that they could take over the US and world. 2. they believed that they would become like God by being "under authority" and rule and reign AS GOD. 3. they lied about their past. I wasn't in the group long but leaving was excruciatingly difficult. 4/
Part of my healing process involved participating in an online cult recovery forum and doing lots and lots and LOTS of research into the group's past, present and teachings. Including the teachings they gave to indoctrinated people once they were properly "under authority." 5/
This has relevance today since what they and similar Religious Right groups did in the 70s and beyond has helped lay the groundwork for what happened on Jan. 6. 6/
I'm going to share two transcripts that I personally transcribed from audio recordings that I have in my possession. They were posted a long time ago - one on a discernment website, and one on a cult recovery forum - but I can attest to the authenticity of both of these. 7/

Have to do a short errand, but I'll be back to highlight what I think are pertinent points from these two sermons. They should highlight why I've been so afraid of what is going on in the US right now for over 15 years. BTW, the Wagner talk predates Wallnau's 7 Mountains. 11/

I'm not responsible for the forward on the site I posted, but the site editor notes the same part of the talk that I was and still am the most disturbed about-the part about overthrowing governments. I said at the time that it was promoting sedition. I still think so. 13/
Wagner's logic is that church, or the "ecclesia" goes beyond Sunday gatherings, The church is in the world, and in each of the spheres that make up society-government, education, military and so on. 14/
He argues that God's plan is for these spheres to be brought under apostolic authority-under God's government. It is up to the church to populate these spheres to bring them under apostolic government. The existing secular authorities belong to Satan and must be overthrown. 15/
The church creates a new government. And once the government is established, then the existing governments can be overthrown. "It takes a government to overthrow a government." Teachings like these have become more and more mainstream since 2004. 16/
This was spiritualized and refined in Lance Wallnau's "Seven Mountains Prophecy," but it's basically the same thing. It's also very similar to what Maranatha and Morning Star/Every Nation had been doing for years before this. 17/
The New Apostolic Reformation & similar Religious Right groups view themselves as the only legitimate authority over... everything. Even though other Right and white supremacist groups were at the forefront on 1/6, this is the kind of thinking that permeates these movements. 18/
Anyone who opposes this are demonized. It doesn't take much to go from "it takes a government to overthrow a government" to believing that you have been given God's authority to actually overthrow the government-because it is illegitimate and evil. Satanic. 19/
"To Reach and to Rule" isn't much different logically, but Jim Laffoon's sermon is a call for followers to join an army that will "open the gates and let the rest of us in" to rule. Very similar to what happened on 1/6. 20/

The Manekshaws had six children, four boys and two girls, and Sam was the fifth child. Sam had his schooling at Nainital's Sherwood College.+

After completing his schooling, he should have gone to England to pursue higher studies; this was the promise made to him by his father but, fortunately for the Indian Army, Dr Manekshaw felt that this particular son was far too young to be on his own in a foreign country, even+

So I have a funny story about Governor General Jules Leger. I was working in the gardens on the grounds as a summer student in 1972 (might have been 1973, I can't quite remember, but it was the first year that women were hired as labourers by the NCC).1/

One of the things that we had to do was rake The pebble gravel on the paths and that was my task this particular day. I was out raking when I saw a Columbo type man dressed in a fedora and a crumpled raincoat approach me.2/

At that time the grounds were open to the public so it wasn't particularly surprising to have someone wander up and we chatted. I realized that he had recently had a stroke and that his English, while fluent, was a little slow. 3/

Anyway, we had a very nice chat and the next time I saw him in the garden, I showed him some baby rabbits that had a nest in the front rotundra. He thought they were pretty adorable.4/

I was able to pick one up for him to hold, but it was difficult for him because one of his hands was quite paralyzed. Anyway, he thought this was very lovely and our regular chats continued.4/

Shivaji’s growing influence in Maval region, made him a threat to the Adil Shahi ruler of Bijapur who sought to restrain him. The man who was given the responsibility of this mission, was their commander, Afzal Khan. Afzal was a formidable warrior known for his ruthlessness.(1)

His strategy was to bring Shivaji out into the plains, where he held an advantage, compared to the rocky Deccan terrain. Afzal attacked the holy town of Pandharpur, and later demolished the temple of Bhavani at Tuljapur to instigate Shivaji in a bid to bring him out.(2)

Shivaji was angry but remained patient. Knowing that he could not defeat Bijapuri Sultanate in an open battle, Shivaji moved to Pratapgarh fort, located on rocky heights, surrounded by thick forests of Jawali.(3)

This set the pattern for future Maratha attacks, using guerrilla warfare against larger invading armies rendering them ineffective in unfavorable terrain.(4)

So. I loved #TheDig. Despite being set in the 30's it evoked a lot of my early fieldwork experience in the 80's and some of the things archaeologists were gushing about are still pay of the experience today. And it also evoked the fantasy that I became an archaeologist to chase>

Because, being aware of that fantasy, I'm also aware of corrosive elements, things that structure how archaeology works, both practically & in the collective imagination which work against that other fantasy, that my work can 'make a difference' contribute to progressive change>

The primary driver of the story is class & it's connection to skill & to land. EP has the right to the land, the choice to dig, the ownership of the artefacts because she is the landowner. We are meant to cheer along when the coroner decides in her favour>

BB is a man of the land, he literally knows the soil of Suffolk by feel. His skill & sense are central to the story. And they are credited with the discovery, which is the most important part of the process, not the analysis, care or interpretation>

Published a new essay: The red flags and magic numbers that investors look for in your startup’s metrics – 80 slide deck included!


This was a deck that I created on my (longish) interview process with @a16z. It was a long path, starting with meeting folks at the firm 10 years ago. But the purpose of the deck was to explain how I would use my superpower in an investing context

Here's what I explain in the deck. As investors (whether angel or VC) we're often confronted with an up-and-to-the-right graph. Is it going to go up? Or down?


One solution to forecast these growth curves is the Growth Accounting Framework, where you add up New+Reactivated and subtract churned users. In each time period that gives you the difference in monthly actives.


The problem with this is that it's a lagging metric, not a leading one. We need to go one level deeper and look at the underlying loops that drive these numbers, to understand the quality.

What you call chaos I call spontaneity.

A regimented life is like a heartbeat that's non-chaotic; it's a system that’s too ordered. It doesn't have any life to it. And real life has lots of ups and downs, some of them very extreme.

I over-plan, but planning is pretty useless. What tends to dominant life are a small number of Black Swan events in both directions, positive and negative.

Expose yourself to asymmetric upside and lots of good options: things that can become massively important for you.

And you want to avoid the asymmetric downside: anything that can end the game, whether it's through financial ruin, or reputational ruin, or physical ruin.

That requires a certain amount of chaos and spontaneity.

If nothing else, 2020 taught the power of optionality.

We think about planning as linear and controlled, but that's not how the world around us works anymore.

The world is dominated by nonlinearities, so understanding options value is far more important.

Fake chats claiming to be from the Irish African community are being disseminated by the far right in order to suggest that violence is imminent from #BLM supporters. This is straight out of the QAnon and Proud Boys playbook. Spread the word. Protest safely. #georgenkencho


There is co-ordination across the far right in Ireland now to stir both left and right in the hopes of creating a race war. Think critically! Fascists see the tragic killing of #georgenkencho, the grief of his community and pending investigation as a flashpoint for action.


Across Telegram, Twitter and Facebook disinformation is being peddled on the back of these tragic events. From false photographs to the tactics ofwhite supremacy, the far right is clumsily trying to drive hate against minority groups and figureheads.


Declan Ganley’s Burkean group and the incel wing of National Party (Gearóid Murphy, Mick O’Keeffe & Co.) as well as all the usuals are concerted in their efforts to demonstrate their white supremacist cred. The quiet parts are today being said out loud.


The best thing you can do is challenge disinformation and report posts where engagement isn’t appropriate. Many of these are blatantly racist posts designed to drive recruitment to NP and other Nationalist groups. By all means protest but stay safe.
