SHIVA BORN AS RISHI PIPPALAD

Pippalad was born as Mahadev’s incarnation to Rishi Dadhichi and Suvarcha.
Once, the Devas needed the bones of Rishi Dadhichi to end the menace of Vritrasur.
Dadhichi donated his bones readily and the Vajra created from his bones ended Vritrasur.

When his wife Suvarcha came to know this, she decided to be Sati but could not as she was pregnant. Later, she left her earthly body after giving birth to a child. He grew up feeding on pipal leaves and som(nectar) given my moon, so he came to be called Pippalad.

When he grew up, he came to know about his parent’s sacrifice. He was angered by the selfishness of the Devas and decided to destroy them. It is said that his angry glance at Shani made Shani fall and hurt his foot.
Only Mahadev was able to calm Pippalada and make him see reason

Pippalada wrote The Prashnopanishad which is embedded in Atharva Veda.
The Prashna Upanishad is a Mukhya Upanishad and contains six Prashna (questions). Each Prashna is assigned a chapter with a discussion of answers.

There has been a lot of debate about #NonVegeterians being Hindu or not.

Padma Purana describes the birth of Ashokasundari. Asoka means no sorrow and sundari means Beautiful.

Once Parvati Devi requested Shiva to take her to the most beautiful garden in the world. Mahadeva took her to Nandanvana, where Devi saw a tree, Kalpavriksha which could fulfill any wish. Parvathi Devi was feeling alone as Muruga and Ganesha were grown up.

To get rid of loneliness, Devi asked for a daughter as a wish to Kalpavriksha. Fulfilling Devi's wish Ashokasundari was born.
A demon Hunda wanted to marry Ashokasundari, but Devi informed him that she would marry Nahusha of Lunar Dynasty. Hunda once tricks and takes

Ashokasundari to his place. But when she came to know she was tricked, Ashokasundari cursed Hunda that he will be killed by Nahusha. Thus Nahusha defeated the demon and married Ashokasundari. In south Ashokasundari is called Bala Tripura Sundari.

ETTUMANOOR MAHADEVA, KOTTAYAM (KER)

It is said that once, Shiva was pleased with the prayers of demon Khara. He gave 3 shivlingas to him n told him to worship them regularly. Khara held 2 lingas in his hands and hung one from his neck. While coming back, he fell as he was tired.

He consecrated the 2 lingas in his hand there. These are believed to be Vaikom Shiva and Ettumanoor Shiva. Then he took out the 3rd one hanging around his neck with his teeth and consecrated that too. So it is called Kadichiruthi/Kaduthuruthi (put down with teeth).

After consecrating all, Khara is believed to have become a deer and started worshiping Prabhu. Shiva, then, took the deer in his hand and held it there. So this place was called Udhruthaina Puram, which means Ettumanoor (place where the deer was lifted).

The major attraction in this mandir is “Ezhara Ponnana” or Seven and a half elephants. These statues are made of wood and covered with gold plates. A total of 58 kilo gold is used to create them. It is believed that the King of Travancore has made these idols for Vaikom Mandir.

It was being carried out to Vaikom by water but the boat got stuck on sand. An astrologer came there and told them that, Ettumanoorappan, the presiding Devta of Ettumanoor got attracted to these statues and will not part with it. So the King donated the statues to Ettumanoor.

Beautiful Story of how this unique tradition of Anayottam ( Elephant Race )started.
Anayottam is conducted to select which elephant should carry Thidambu of Guruvayoorappan.

Anayottam starts from Manjulalthara and ends at the eastern entrance of Temple. Anayottam marks the starting of 10 day Annual festival.

Story is like this..
Guruvayur temple was under the control of
Trikkana mathilakam temple.

For Guruvayur temple festivals, Elephants were brought from Trikkana mathilakam temple. Once because of some misunderstandings Mathilakam temple authorities refused to send Elephants to Guruvayur. They chained the Elephants with strong Iron Chains.

Breaking the chains by themselves, Elephants started running towards Guruvayur. Clinging sounds of bells were heard from Manjulalthara. In memory of this event, Anayottam is held every year in Guruvayur temple.

THE KATHA OF SHANI DEV

Shani literally means the “slow-moving-one”. He is the son of Surya and Chhaya. When he was in his mother’s womb, she was engrossed in penance of Shiva in blazing sun and didn’t even care to have food. So, Shani Dev was born with dark skin.

Once when Hanuman was praying to Sri Ram, Shani Dev came to him and asked Hanuman to fight with him. Hanuman Ji tied Shani in his tail and tightened the coil. He, then, moved his tail in all directions. Shani Dev started bleeding and was in immense pain.

To relieve his pain, Hanuman ji gave Shani Dev some oil and sesame seeds. Since then, it has become a practice to worship Shani Dev with oil and sesame seeds.
It not only soothes his pain, but also makes him beneficent towards Ram and Hanuman devotees.

Ravana,once, took all the 9 planets as captive. When Hanuman went in search of Ma Sita, he freed Shani Dev.

Shani Dev then said to Hanuman that the effect of Shani’s inauspiciousness will never affect him in any way. He also promised not to trouble anyone who was a Ram Bhakta.

Shani is also a Devta of justice. He is known to give one the fruits of his deeds in his present life itself. He keeps a faithful account of our previous Karma.
The Shani Mandir at Shingnapur (Maha) is the most famous Shani Mandir. Even to this day, people do’nt lock doors here.

Avataras are of many varieties and frankly, most of the classification is only for our understanding and not really binding on Paramatma Himself. We can take several approaches to understanding this. If you go by a Vedantic approach,+

@GunduHuDuGa Avatara means that which descends from an exalted state (Taara). Going by Upanishadic observaton of Purnam adham purnam idham, every manifestation of Bhagavan is indeed wholesome. In fact, Avataras usually happen when Iswara is propitiated with certain qualities already+

@GunduHuDuGa described in the Vedas by other Devatas. So, in order to please them, He assumes the form that best envisages the said Vaidika tatvam. For example, Varaha and Nrusimha avatars, though they have sthoola prayojanas, also exemplify the Tejovanna tatvam propounded by Upanishads.+

@GunduHuDuGa All these tatvams ultimately emanate from Him so whatever form He takes is indeed Purna. Now, one may ask then if that's the case, why such a distinction had to be made in the first place. That is because of upasana vidhis and understanding of how Bhagavad tatvam shines+

Apart from the factor that the community as a whole gives more importance to these kind of exams,there is another prime reason.

Let's explore..

At a young age,their children as a rule WILL HAVE TO memorise the verses from their religious book in a language totally different from Indic languages.They have regular exams too for the same.

We see this in another community too for whom religious classes are a never miss.

Let us look at ourselves.

Do we have any such rigid 'rules' to teach the vast enormous stotras or verses from Gita etc?

Even at our homes,we do not enforce or even encourage the little ones from a tender age to assimilate the never ending treasures within our religion.

Learning a new language,apart from mother tongue &English at a young age definitely has a huge influence.

And why not that be Sanskrit,the usual medium having our verses,sutras?

If learning Sanskrit looks like an uphill task,try encouraging kids to learn and chant sahasranama.

The benefits of this are many fold.
1)The tremendous effect of memorising verses on the brain.
2)As the child grows,he/she will have an inclination to learn Sanskrit which is a language that can be learnt only under will and not on force.
3)It roots the child to his/her religion.

We should be extremely proud that we are inheritors to such vaangmayam that no other civ in this world has. :)

WHO ARE VALAKHILYAS?

Valakhilyas are 60000 Rishis who are thumb-sized. They were born to Kratu and Kriya. Rig Veda says that they sprang from the hairs of Brahma.
They move in front of Surya dev’s chariot as Sun moves daily and
shine like brilliant lights due to severe tapasya.

Tamil literature says that the main task of Valakhilyas is to prevent human beings from being scorched. They absorb the excess heat from the sun by travelling in front of him. They, in turn, get energy from Skanda and Ma Durga. The food of Valakhilyas is only wind.

Once, Rishi Kashyap performed a yagna and invited all the Devas and Rishis to help him. Indra brought a whole mountain of trees for firewood. The Valakhilyas were hardly able to lift anything but leaves. Even when they were moving leaves, they fell into rain water puddles.

Indra made fun of them. So they cursed Indra saying that his slayer would be born as the son of Kashyapa. When Indra apologized, they modified the curse that the son shall be initially an enemy of Indra, but later will become his friend.

This son born later to Kashyapa was Garuda. He flew to Indraloka to get Amrita and defeated Indra.
Later, he restored amrit vessel to Indra and was honoured as the King of birds and as the mount of Sri Vishnu.

போனவாரம் என் மனைவி எங்கள் பேரனிடம் குடிக்க கொஞ்சம் தண்ணீர் வேண்டும் என்று கேட்டாள். என் பேரனும் போய் குடிதண்ணீர் எடுத்து வராமல்

டம்ளரில் குழாய் தண்ணீரை பிடித்து கொண்டு வந்தான். அதை அப்படியே குடித்து விட்டு "சமத்துடா கொழந்த... அடுத்த வாட்டி யாராவது குடிக்க தண்ணீர் கேட்டால் அதோ அந்த குடத்தில் இருந்து தான் எடுத்து கொடுக்கணும். சரியா?" என்று சொன்னாள்.

இதைப் பார்த்து என் மகள், "ஏம்மா... அந்த தண்ணிய குடிச்ச?" என்று கொஞ்சம் கடிந்து கொண்டாள்.

"கொழந்த ஶ்ரீராம் எவ்வளவு பாசமா... ஆசையா கொண்டு வந்தான் தெரியுமா? அவனை disappoint பண்ணக்கூடாது. அதுக்கு தான் ஒண்ணும் சொல்லாமல் குடிச்சேன்" என்றாள்.

ஆஹா.... பாட்டி சொன்ன கதை ஒன்று ஞாபகம் வந்தது... அது....

ஒரு இளைஞன் வெளியூர் சென்று திரும்பும்போது பாலைவனத்தின் வழியே திரும்ப நேர்ந்தது. அப்போது ஒரு சுனையில் நீரை கண்டான். ஆவலுடன் ஓடிச்சென்று நீரை பருகியவன், அந்த நீரின் சுவையில் அளவற்ற மகிழ்ச்சியடைந்தான்.

A beautiful story of Guruvayurappan 👇
In Guruvayur, there lived a girl named Manjula. She was a great bhaktha of Guruvayurappan. She used to make a flower Garland daily for Guruvayurappan temple.

One day, when she made Garland, it was so late that temple Nada was closed. The poojari refused to accept her Garland as temple is closed. Manjula felt guilty and she started to cry.
Poonthanam Namboodiri, a devotee of Guruvayurappan was on his way back from the temple.

He saw Manjula crying under the banyan tree. He comforted her and said she can place the garland on the stone at the foot of the banyan tree, since the Bhagwan is everywhere. 

Convinced at this, Manjula kept the garland there and went home feeling relieved.

HOW KRISHNA LEFT EARTH:BHALKA TEERTH

It was the end of Mahabharata war. The loss of all her sons filled Gandhari, mother of Kauravas, with grief and anger.
She chided Krishna n cursed him, “36 years from today, you will die. Dwaraka will be flooded. Yadava clan will end”

Time passed. Once, Rishi Durvasa visited Krishna and as per his wish, Krishna applied Payasam (rice kheer) on his body. As his legs were resting on the ground, he could not apply it to his feet. Durvasa said, “You have not applied Payasam to my foot. Your death is in your foot.”

36 years later, Krishna lay down under a tree and went into Yoga Samadhi. A hunter Jara while hunting, misunderstood the moving foot of Krishna as a hidden deer and shot a lethal arrow that pierced into Krishna’s feet.

Krishna told the grieving Jara that in his previous birth, Jara was Bali (brother of Sugreev). Rama had killed Bali from behind and in this birth, the same fate was met by Prabhu himself.
This is how Prabhu showed that the law of karma remains the same for all.

Bhalka Tirtha Veraval (भालका तीर्थ) which is about 4 kilometers from the Somnath Mandir is believed to be the place where Krishna gave up his mortal body and ascended to Baikunth. The name Bhalka is said to be derived from the word Bhal which means arrow.

Thiruvadira is celebrated in a full moon day of Dhanu / Marghazhi month in Kerala and Tamilnadu. Thiruvadira is the nakshatra of Mahadeva. It is auspicious to worship Siva and go to the temple before sunrise for darshan.

Thiruvathira in Kerala is important for women. Thiruvathira Vratham is taken by all ladies. Unmarried for a good married life and married ladies for long life of husband.
Thiruvathirakali a dance form is performed.There is a custom called Pathirappochoodal 👇

Means adorn the hair with flowers at midnight.

In Tamilnadu, Ardradarshanam celebrated in all Shiva temples. Worshiping the Dance form of Mahadeva, Nataraja is auspicious. Chidambaram temple celebrate Ardra Darshanam in a grant manner. People observe fast on this day

Sage Vyagrapada, and Adishesha observed the fast and were given darshan of Cosmic dance by Nataraja on this day.
On this day a special sweet called as ‘Thiruvadirakali is made and offered to Shiva.

ARUDRA DARSHAN: TODAY

This day falls on the full moon night when the Tiruvadirai (Arudra) star rules over. This is also the longest night of the year.
Arudra is the star that symbolizes golden red flame, which is none else than Shiva at his cosmic dance (Nataraj).

Natraj stands in dancing posture with one leg lifted n other seated on the demon signifying ignorance. He indicates mastery on ego, desires n evil and holds all 5 elements in him through Damaru (ether), flowing hair (air), Flame in hand (fire), Ganga(water) n rested foot (earth)

On the day of Arudra Darshan, people receive a special kind of dish as prasad namely Kali (in Tamil), which is a sweet dish indicating bliss. It is said eating this shall remove all the afflictions of people and make them blissful.

Temple is known as Sabarimala of Women

Thiruvairanikulam Mahadeva Temple is situated on the banks of the Periyar River. Siva Temple has a separate sannidhi for Parvathi Devi which will be open only for 12 days a year

The Nadathurappu Mahothsavam happens every year on Malayalam month of Dhanu. On opening day, a grand procession starting from Akavoor Mana carries the ornaments of Devi to the temple. Swayamvara Archana is the main pooja here to clear the obstacle in marriages.
Legend is that 👇

Vigraham existed in another place called Iranikulam. A Namboodiri of Sreemoolanagaram used to visit the Iranikulam temple regularly. Akavoor Chathan, a boatman will take him to the Iranikulam temple and back. Because of Bhakthi of Namboodiri, Shiva traveled with him to his place.

Akavoor Chathan identified Siva chaitanyam and their family built a temple here. Parvati devi herself will cook Nevidyam here for Shiva, which was witnessed by a priest. Devi was angry at this and decided to leave the place. But when the priest offered his sincere apology👇

Devi blessed him and told that she will be present here 12 days in a year. Thus the period which begins from Thiruvathirai Day in Dhanu is known as the Nadathurappu festival.
Temple Nada opens today night.
