On a bright, cold Saturday, we found a scene that onlookers described as “surreal” and “post-apocalyptic.” One ANC commissioner estimated that troops outnumbered residents five to one. https://t.co/CVYH5gC26E
Residents in the militarized zone described how their lives have been ensnared by the security apparatus. “With the bridges closing out of Virginia, it feels like it’s just us, and the whole world is watching.” https://t.co/HbW2FtOsjm
Speaking of the bridges closing, @JWPascale mapped out the street closures. As Mayor Muriel Bowser put it: “Clearly we are in unchartered waters.” https://t.co/qU9lOPCqsx
All of those closures and new security measures have upended the lives and services of people experiencing homelessness, as @mikafrak reported

Re: Your ABSENCE is required
Dear Republicans,
Do NOT legitimize the sham of @JoeBiden by attending on Jan. 20.
All voters were disenfranchised by his election fraud.
To those who CERTIFIED this FRAUD: Shame on you!

I am working on it, lobbying ministers. There is a failure here amongst officialdom not to be ready with certification from Jan 1. It should be been simple, seamless and inexpensive. It's not rocket science. Needs addressing urgently @michaelgove @BorisJohnson

But by the same token, the Brexit Party was at every point in the process demanding a walkout - which would have landed him with disruption worse than at present with tariffs that would have killed exports anyway.
At best, though, even if those "teething troubles" are resolved, food produce is still looking at an inspection rate of 20%, all at random, the the SPS paperwork, along with finding a responsible importer is a fixed feature of being outside the single market.
could and should have known this. It was in the Notices to Stakeholders. Moreover, he had the research facilities of the European Parliament at his disposal which he could have used for the benefit of his entire industry. So what was he doing with his time there?
None of what is happening at the border comes as any surprise to us because well in advance of the referendum we produced a plan, looking at the consequences of each option. The Brexit Party, despite its massive resources, elected not to do this kind of groundwork.

"The BBC needs a chairman committed to demolishing its institutional groupthink. . . . . . .it isn't going to get one, thanks solely to the timidity & duplicity of Johnson and his flaccid government"
As pretty much confirmed by @Madz_Grant's perceptive sketch of the new BBC chairman's not so much grilling as gentle warming by an unthreatening DCMS Select
"He fluently deployed trendy corporate jargon and phrases like 'matrix of diversity'. The licence fee, he added, was the 'least-worst' model, although 'when we next get a chance to review ... it may be worth reassessing'."
Doesn't exactly suggest a radical reformer, does it?
Already clear from Maitlis' continued blatant editorialising, despite new #BBC CEO's instruction to curb it, that Davie's executive writ barely runs to his own office door.
Sadly, BBC's new chairman looks unlikely to change that.
