बिजली के आविष्कारक - महर्षि अगस्त्य

राव साहब कृष्णाजी वझे ने १८९१ में विज्ञान संबंधी ग्रंथों की खोज के दौरान उन्हें उज्जैन में दामोदर त्र्यम्बक जोशी के पास अगस्त्य संहिता के कुछ पन्ने मिले।

इस संहिता के पन्नों में उल्लिखित वर्णन को पढ़कर नागपुर में संस्कृत के विभागाध्यक्ष

रहे डा. एम.सी. सहस्रबुद्धे को आभास हुआ कि यह वर्णन डेनियल सेल से मिलता-जुलता है। अत: उन्होंने नागपुर में इंजीनियरिंग के प्राध्यापक श्री पी.पी. होले को वह दिया और उसे जांचने को कहा। श्री अगस्त्य ने अगस्त्य संहिता में विधुत उत्पादन से सम्बंधित सूत्रों में लिखा:

संस्थाप्य मृण्मये पात्रे ताम्रपत्रं सुसंस्कृतम्‌।
छादयेच्छिखिग्रीवेन चार्दाभि: काष्ठापांसुभि:॥
दस्तालोष्टो निधात्वय: पारदाच्छादितस्तत:।
संयोगाज्जायते तेजो मित्रावरुणसंज्ञितम्‌॥

अगस्त्य संहिता :

अर्थात: एक मिट्टी का पात्र (Earthen pot) लें, उसमें ताम्र पट्टिका (copper sheet)

डालें तथा शिखिग्रीवा डालें, फिर बीच में गीली काष्ट पांसु (wet saw dust) लगायें, ऊपर पारा (mercury‌) तथा दस्त लोष्ट (Zinc) डालें, फिर तारों को मिलाएंगे तो, उससे मित्रावरुणशक्ति का उदय होगा।

पर अब यहाँ थोड़ी सी हास्यास्पद स्थति उत्पन्न हुई।

Dhritarashtra's charioteer so that he could describe him the events of the upcoming war.

But, even before questions of war could begin, Dhritarashtra asked him to describe how the world looks like from space.

This is how he described the face of the world:

सुदर्शनं प्रवक्ष्यामि द्वीपं तु कुरुनन्दन। परिमण्डलो महाराज द्वीपोऽसौ चक्रसंस्थितः॥
यथा हि पुरुषः पश्येदादर्शे मुखमात्मनः। एवं सुदर्शनद्वीपो दृश्यते चन्द्रमण्डले॥ द्विरंशे पिप्पलस्तत्र द्विरंशे च शशो महान्।

—वेद व्यास, भीष्म पर्व, महाभारत

Meaning:-

हे कुरुनन्दन ! सुदर्शन नामक यह द्वीप चक्र की भाँति गोलाकार स्थित है, जैसे पुरुष दर्पण में अपना मुख देखता है, उसी प्रकार यह द्वीप चन्द्रमण्डल में दिखायी देता है। इसके दो अंशो मे पीपल और दो अंशो मे विशाल शश (खरगोश) दिखायी देता है।

Meaning: "Just like a man sees his face in the mirror, so does the Earth appears in the Universe. In the first part you see leaves of the Peepal Tree, and in the next part you see a Rabbit."

Based on this shloka, Saint Ramanujacharya sketched out the map, but the world laughed

What is Yagnopaveetham?

Yagnopaveetham is a Sanskrit word; Yagna means sacred ritual and ‘upaveetham’ means a covering. Thus Yagnopaveetham means a sacred covering on the body without which a Yagna or a sacred ritual cannot be performed.

Yagnopaveetham is a triple-stranded sacrificial filament joined by a knot called ‘Brahmagranthi’ that is worn by those initiated into the Gayathri recital. So It is also called as ‘Brahmasuthram’

Yagno-pavita means ‘thread of sacrifice’ that symbolizes the

sacrifice of ego, anger & selfishness.

What significants three threads :

The sacred thread is a composition of 3 threads, signifying Goddesses Gayatri (thought),Saraswati (speech,wisdom) and Savitri (deed) respectively

The three strands remind the wearer that he has to pay off

the three debts (Runas) he owes to the ancient seers, ancestors and to the God viz. Deva, Rushi, Pithru Runa.

What should be its length?

When you wear the length of Yagnopaveetham should come up to the navel level and it should be neither above nor below the navel.

It is said that if it is below the navel it will lead to the loss of power of penance and if it is above the navel it is Ayuksheenam (decline in longevity).

“Yagnopaveetham Navathanthu Nirmitham;”
Yagnopaveetham is made up of nine layers of woven cotton

The Finger Names in ‘Sanskrit’ are, Thumb is called ‘Angushtha’, Pointing finger is called ‘Tarjani’, Middle finger is ‘Madhyama’, Ring finger is ‘Anamika’ and the Smallest finger is called ‘Kanishtika’.

Mudras are hand gestures used in yoga and meditation, which mean ‘mark’ or ‘seal’ in Sanskrit. In the Mudra philosophy, it is believed that our 5 fingers correspond to the 5 elements of the universe -

Thumb - fire, Index finger Varuna (Air) Middle finger- Akasha (Space), Ring finger - Prithvi (Earth), Little Finger -Jal(Water).

Practitioners believe that when the finger representing a particular element is brought into contact with the thumb, that element is brought into

balance, creating a stabilizing effect on the entire body. Mudras start electromagnetic currents in the body, create balance and promote health. Regular practice of these mudras can help create a balance between these five elements in the body.
