Farm Bill 2020 – The Punjab Angle

When the Farm Bill protest started, the first question which crossed my mind was “Why only Punjab?”

So I started my investigation, read Farm Bill many time and

discussed in length with my farmer friends in UP, Bihar, Haryana and Punjab. I had already written in detail about MSP and PAN in bills.

We discussed many issues from MSP to land to storage & private players. We also understood that 70% procurement of crop is by

Government, which is used for PDS system.

One response which shocked me was when my Punjab friend, a farmer in Punjab told me that 90% of crop for personal use they bring in from UP, MP, Rajasthan & Bihar. This rang alarm bells because it didn’t sink well with me that the

farmer who is growing crop is not consuming it. My friend told me that Punjab crop is toxic in nature.

I started researching on food items in my own kitchen like Rice, Dal and wheat and what I discovered is that none of these items are from Punjab but
