Sarkhel Kanhoji was one of the bravest Maratha naval commanders. For more than 40 years, he guarded the western waters of India from invaders. He attained Sadgati on the 4th of July in 1729.
The Marathas under Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj created several naval bases and stationed a strong professional naval force in the Indian waters. His naval forces attacked English, Dutch and Portuguese ships and captured British vessels.
Shivaji’s naval fleet had around 700 vessels of various sizes capacities that included ships, warships, small and large row boats, gun boats, canoe, cargo boats, large vessels with two masts, and the list goes on.
Angre led several victorious exploits at sea in between 1698 until his death in 1729.He was involved in naval battles against the British,Dutch & Portuguese in the Indian waters many times.He won each time.He was termed a 'PIRATE' by the Europeans; such was the terror he created.
