In the year 2000 he was AC Intelligence Services (IS) in Coimbatore. It was just two years after the 1998 Coimbatore bomb blast. This Rathinasabapathy sent a false report to govt, just ahead of budget session that there is going to another serial blast in Coimbatore. 4/n

Following the serial blasts in 1998, intelligence and security apparatus was strengthened and there was absolutely no possibility of such an incident. The said Rathinasabapathy, sent this false report with an intention to get medal. 5/n

The legion would have acted as a pathfinder force for the planned German campaign into India. This seemed feasible as Rommel’s Afrika Korps was sweeping across north Africa with west Asia as the next target.(4)

The Arhtiyas (Middlemen) of Punjab

The Arhtiyas of Punjab are political connected.

In July 2017, in a public function the Arhyiyas felicitated Amarinder Singh with the title of ‘Fakhr-e-Quam’(Pride of the Community).

Post that function, the CM had said it would be difficult to waive off the debt owed by farmers to the arhtiyas.

As many as 86% of farmer & 80% of agricultural labours are mired in debt, says a study on Indebtedness among Farmers & Agricultural Labourers in Rural Punjab.

Its authors, researchers at Punjabi University, Patiala, say over a fifth of that debt was owed to commission agents and moneylenders.

No less than 8,294 farmers took their own lives between 2000 & 2015, says a study presented last year before the Vidhan Sabha’s Committee.

6,373 agricultural labourers also killed themselves in the same period. And that was in just six of the state’s 22 districts.

The study, commissioned by the state government’s revenue department, found that 83 per cent of all these suicides were largely debt-driven.

An estimate in the year 2012-13 indicated that every Arhitya/ Middle men/ Commission agent earned on a average of 6.7 Lakh on interest payments.

Their average other income excluding commissions & MSP cuts per year is 12 Lakh/ Annum. They receive 1370 Cr in interest every year

Its role as a social safety net.

And it is much bigger and more effective than all the other safety nets - like MNREGA - that we currently have.

Safety nets are most important in countries that have a lot of vulnerable people and have adopted a market-led growth strategy.

Markets are useful in driving higher growth over time, but are also much more vulnerable to many types of shocks.

Covid-19 is a good example.

Vulnerable people do not have adequate savings to fall back on in times of such shocks.

Social safety nets are the only mechanism that can prevent them from life and health risks during these shocks.

Think of the reverse migration that India experienced after the imposition of the first lockdown.

The only reason so many wage workers took such a risky decision was because they trusted the agricultural sector to save their lives. And arguably it did.

In Himachal Pradesh there are beautiful apple orchards everywhere, especially in Shimla.

There is a place called Lalru where small merchants and traders would deal in apples buying it off the farmers.
One day Adani's eyes fell on this lucrative market. He quickly got a survey done of the warehouses in the region.

He found out that these warehouses could store small quantities of around 100 to 200 tons of apples which were brought in by traders and soon sold off.
Now what Adani did was construct a warehouse which was thousand times bigger than the warehouse in the area.

In fact, said the farmer, it was so huge that it was beyond what one's eyes could see. At that point apples were sold at Rs. 20 per kilo to traders by the apple growing farmers.

Adani in a tempting gesture gave the farmers @ Rs. 22 a kilo, something the farmers just could not resist and accepted. Unfortunately the new dealings hit the small traders there adversely. Within one year the small traders could barely sustain themselves yet prodded on.
